After all, no truly happy person feels the need to stand in front of a mirror and recite that she’s happy. She just is.
Manson starts the book with his dismay at modern day culture, explaining how it is filled with unrealistic expectation. The ‘American Dream’ is the sole purpose of life for many. Be the best: Richer, sexier, slimmer, funnier, happier, more popular and admired. The list is endless. This is common self help advice and it all focus’s on one thing – what you lack. Your shortcomings, or what you perceive them to be. Through zoning in only on what is ‘better’, what could be superior in our lives, it is a constant reminder of all the times we’ve fallen short.
The common definition of the good life is the big house, fancy car and enormous T.V. Every day commercials repeat over and over the key to happiness is more, more, more. They focus specifically on your perceived shortcomings. Giving a fuck about these things is good for business, but not for yourself. Constantly chasing these superficial values and products is detrimental for your mental health, providing only a temporary satisfaction until the next shiny object appears on your screens and is stuffed down your throat. The key to the good life is to give a fuck about less, only what is truly important.
The introduction of social media now ensures that whenever
