    EATING PRACTICES

In our Western Culture it has become common knowledge that people tend to eat for emotional reasons rather than hunger. Much of our natural instinct around hunger and satiation has become intricately complicated due to factors such as socialisation practices, social conventions and personal meanings. Much of the food types we eat we tend to eat for emotional reasons rather than the simplistic relationship of satisfying our physical hunger.

Personal beliefs and meanings attributed to eating foods relate to early parental influences and social conventions. For example a mother says to her child If you behave yourself when we are out shopping, I will buy you an ice cream. Giving ice cream and treats as a reward for good behaviour has over the years, become common practice. These treats become ingrained in your psyche and hold much personal significance into adult life. The meanings and significance are often loaded with emotional notions, specifically pleasure - love, shame and guilt - punishment. Your relationship to the food you eat and your body image
