About this ebook
in many cases, is there for the taking.
And, in the midst of all of this,
may HOPE be your constant companion!
By telling my story, it is hoped that this book will tell people about my war, and help people who are fighting obesity, glucose control, High Blood Pressure or, perhaps something else. This may help them understand that they are not alone, and that there is hope, that tomorrow can be new day, and that victory, in many cases, is there for the taking.
If there is a central theme to this story, it is hope!
We want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have encouraged us along the way. The power of people is simply amazing, and we are in their debt. During the early part of this journey, the encouragement played a large role in staying the course and building resolve. The temptation to go back to old habits was very strong. Our thanks go to these people, some of whom are recent advocates.
Blessings to all of you!

Introduction
In The Trenches
In The Trenches is a story of a war. This is a personal war. It is a clear description of many battles and the fact that I lost most of those battles in the beginning. That period of losing the war lasted for decades and there were numerous failures, before reaching some success.
The war, at least at first, was against obesity. As that war raged on for several years, two other major fights took place. As I was fighting battles against obesity, and losing, diabetes entered the picture. Then, before winning either the war against excessive weight or diabetes, another fight emerged. I developed High Blood Pressure.
The fight against diabetes lasted for years. It was that battle that brought things to a head and actually put me in a state of desperation. It was this battle, diabetes, which led to the writing of this book. Glucose was the first thing that was documented in this book.
This story is going to attempt to bring understanding about what caused my failures and what was done to reach success. It is also going to reveal that I did not have a real measure of success, until after I reached a point of desperation and reached out to GOD. This story is going to expose a change from the first few sentences you just read. Notice the I’s.
Throughout the period of failures, there were 3 things that became evident:
The first thing was the emphasis on I. I decided. I did. I suffered the consequences. In short, I relied upon my own wisdom, which was, and is, very limited, to choose how I would deal with my battle, rather than rely upon the guidance of those who were seasoned veterans on the war against obesity. I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. Seems appropriate, doesn’t it!
The second thing that became obvious, after a lot of time passed, was that I did NOT understand. Had I understood, maybe I would have listened.
Finally, the last thing being that I did NOT listen.
If you are at a place in your life where you have reached a point of desperation, this process may be for you.
How can you be miserable and not know it? That will also be explained.
There is going to be an emphasis on certain fundamentals that are crucial to my continuing success. These fundamentals are:
Prayer
Humbleness
Building resolve
Identifying balance
Keep the doctor informed
Understanding advertisements
Anticipation
Getting out what you put in
Smiling and laughter
Stress
Time investment
Doubt
Awareness
Taking charge
Exercise
Feedback

Motivation
Success
Patience
Staying the course

Desperation
Self control

Breaking The Routine-The Planned Reward
We will talk about The Daily Routine
, which embraces the new direction of my life. It covers a (9) nine year period that began on July 15th, 2005 and continues to this day. A lot of the references or topics are entered at different times, during this (9) nine year period.
The variety of headings helps to reinforce concepts and fundamentals which are vital to this process.
My Story
I am not a Medical Professional.
My name is Richard Phillips. This is my story. I was obese for many years. After losing a substantial amount of weight, and keeping it off, many acquaintances and friends suggested that I write a book. This is a novel, pardon the pun, approach to weight management, and does not promote a specific diet. It is a process, not a diet. I refer to it as The Daily Routine
&/or"Eating For Effect."
The Daily Routine
, which plays a large role in managing my weight, glucose, and blood pressure, will be described, soon. But, before I address that process, I want to provide some background information.
History
In the Trenches is a story of many failures, before success. It is a story about a personal war with myself. It is a story about a person who fought obesity for about 25 years (and lost most of the time) and then diabetes, type 2 for about (7) years, before discovering something that would have a life changing effect. I call it answered prayer.
Years ago, in the seventies, weight began to accumulate. I had weighed about 185 pounds in 1973. I was 31 and had become a manufacturing supervisor, specializing in manufacturing administration and industrial engineering-(MTM). I had been at 185 pounds for several years, with minor fluctuations. This was my normal weight. As I rose through the ranks of management, I spent more time planning, and less time directing. Consequently, my physical activity on the job lessened. I decided to supplement my lack of activity with a weekly regimen at the local YMCA, three times a week. This went on for a few years.
As I continued to rise in management, to the position of ‘Plant Manager’, my responsibilities increased. As a result, I spent more time on the job. I became less physically active, and finally scheduled no time for the YMCA. In my forties, I began to get too heavy, and would
