    Foreword

Glory be to the Most High Who has deemed me fit to carry this treasury of New Songs for the redeemed in these last days. I consider it a great privilege and honour for His goodness, grace and love and I pray that those who come to these waters, will find solace, bread, new wine, tonic and inspiration for their Race of Grace.

Many of the songs in this book, like the experience of David, have come, not when I was having a mountain experience but in the valley and desert of my life.

God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. He makes rivers in deserts, uses difficulties as opportunities to make good His promises His ways are not our ways and our thoughts are not His thoughts. Indeed God often ‘digs wells of joy with the spade of sorrow.’

This is without doubt, a testament of the power of the Holy Spirit at work in my life and without Him I can do nothing.

De:2:3: Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward

Isa:43:18: Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

Isa:43:19: Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?

I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

Jos:1:1: Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

Jos:1:2: Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

Jos:1:3: Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

Jos:1:4: From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

Jos:1:5: There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Jos:1:6: Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Jos:1:7: Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

Jos:1:8: This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Jos:1:9: Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

May your life be watered as you Sing a New Song to the Lord.

    Introduction

    From Tests to Testimony

Whereas I have self-published before, this is the first time I have plunged into the publishing world, using publishers. It is therefore a significant step for me. For this reason it is for me to give my testimony here, especially in regard to songwriting.

Born again on the 24th of August 1981 after a divine visitation, my life was never going to be the same again.

Hitherto a religious man, who read the Bible occasionally, went to church on festive occasions, priding myself that I sinned in moderation—drank in moderation, fornicated in moderation, deceived people in moderation, cheated and stole in moderation. I compared myself to the worst in society and felt I was a saint. Little did I realise that if I had died in that state I would have gone straight to hell. How deceived! I was like many people today.

In fact, it was soon after I ‘came to a wall,’ whilst trying to have my wicked way with a girl who was sheltering with me that God by His Spirit arrested me in my sleep.

She was stranded and wanted a place to stay for a few days before going back to Nigeria. I had known her in Nigerian many years before and bumped into her in Peckham (UK) and decided to ‘help her’ though I had an ulterior motive behind the Good Samaritan façade and front.

I wasted no time in pushing for a payback as we shared the same bed but she refused to my chagrin and dismay. I thought it was a foregone conclusion we would have sex but she bluntly refused. And what more, whilst struggling with her, I found a Bible under her pillow!

I was not only greatly disappointed but went limp, ashamed, truly sinful, convicted and ceased my selfish, devilish, wicked overtures and promptly went to sleep. Nevertheless I felt badly cheated as there was as it were no compensation for the accommodation I provided.

She was with me for a few days and soon after she left, I had my encounter with the Lord that has changed my life forever. Yes, it was a story of ‘from fornication to salvation.’ God chooses His moments and that was when He decided to intervene in my life.

In my divine visitation I was convicted of sin and surrendered my life to the Lord. Initially I was bluffing, justifying my self-righteousness but I broke down later in tears and admitted guilt as the presence of God was very strong in that room in Peckham.

My songwriting odyssey commenced soon after my baptism in water and in the Holy Spirit. God surrounded me with more mature Christians who knew how to play the guitar and I started learning from them. He also planted a tree of songs in me with branches such as faith, outreach, praise and worship, prophetic etc a few of which are in this book. I remember waking up in the early hours of the morning and humming tunes into my tape recorder so that I could give some ‘flesh to the bones’.

Not long after, I started singing in the church worship team and even using the songs to encourage others in the church.

Well, like the story of the eaglets forced out of their comfortable nest by the ferocious battering from mummy, I received my share from the Lord to teach me to soar. God allowed the enemy to wallop me but only as far as He allowed him as in the case of Job. I also made my mistakes as a young Christian, and even as an adult Christian. But God in His mercy, sovereignty, faithfulness and goodness has been and will continue to work everything together for my good, because I love Him and He loves me with a great love.

And so when I was ‘exiled’ to Ireland for 8 years following my immigration problem, God continued to birth songs of faith, praise and worship and deliverance in the valley of affliction and amidst the fires of oppression and difficulties. My problems and trials gave me depth and buttressed my intimacy with God.

I was able to identify with David who wrote many enduring psalms during his wanderings in the wilderness and while running away from the hot pursuit of King Saul. David’s story greatly encouraged me and I was able to encourage myself in the Lord, using the songs He gave like David did. I have had my share of troubles and still do but God is faithful. He will not allow to come to us what we cannot bear. His grace is sufficient in all seasons and circumstances and we are sufficient in His sufficiency. What the enemy has planned to use to undo us, God uses to make us, build us, develop us and cause us to grow (even if we groan from time to time).

The best is yet to come. This is just the scratching on the surface—the tip of the iceberg.

I pray you will be greatly blessed and encouraged in your walk with God as you read this book. Truly God does use the shovel of difficulties to dig treasures of gold in our lives. He knows what is best for us and does what is best for us. He has the last word concerning us and so long as we are yielded to Him, our end will be one of peace—nothing missing, nothing broken, in Jesus’ Name.

I thank God for giving me a new song to sing this period of my life. And may you also sing a new song in your walk with God regardless of the trials that He allows to visit you as you sing this new song.

    The New Songs

Chapter 1 Praise, worship and thanks

    image003.jpg

    Praise

We are created to praise and worship and have an attitude of gratitude towards our God. This is the best we can give to Him. We need to praise Him with every fibre of our being and worship Him in spirit and in truth. We praise Him for what He has done and for who He is—the mighty God, Great I Am, all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present, wonderful, excellent, glorious, victorious, and awesome. He is worthy of our praise and adoration, from the rising of the sun till the going down of the same. What a glorious privilege that we can approach the Throne of Grace boldly and have fellowship with our Maker. The songs in this chapter are designed to help you enter His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise and worshipping Him Who is worthy be adored.

BORN TO BLAZE HIS PRAISE (poem)

    Born to blaze His praise.

    Born to proclaim His Name.

Born to adorn and adore the High and Holy.

Created to give pleasure to Him.

Created to be His treasured possession.

Created to be His Voice, Hands and Feet on earth.

Created to be His worthy ambassador.

    Born to give Him honour.

Born to be a house on a hill.

Born to be a lighthouse to the world.

Born to live a life of significance.

    Born with a vision
