This book is dedicated to all that have come before me,
All that are currently with me that have helped to mold me,
And all those that I have yet to meet.
Special thank you to my family for believing in me.
Without you none of this would be possible.
Acknowledgement
I would like to take this time to thank my family for their continued support. Without you none of this would be possible. Nadine, I love you. It is your love and faith that you have in me that keeps me going strong. Alyssa and Nia when I look at you two I see so much hope and potential. I can only hope that I can be a parent that you can be proud of. Daddy loves you both. Mom and Dad you both have been pillars in my development and I appreciate and love you both. Thank you for your guidance and for never giving up on me. I can never repay all you have done for me and continue to do for me. To my sister Nichola it is your drive and determination that keeps my fire lit. For that I say thank you. Last but definitely not least one of my biggest supporters Suzeline I say thank you for your support through the years and being my second mother.
I dedicate this book to my family and everyone who has had a hand in my nursing career. Thank you all for helping to mold me in to the man you see today.
Dear Reader,
I would like to take this time to thank you for reading this book. I hope you enjoy its content and if you are contemplating the field of Nursing I hope it gives you some insight into your decision. The purpose of this book was to show how all inclusive nursing has become. At any point while reading this the name Kevin could have been substituted with Kathy, Michael, or Michelle. Nursing is no longer a gender specific profession.
These stories although fictional are accounts that take place in hospitals around the country every day. Nurses are called on to do a wide variety of tasks in their different settings. There are growing opportunities for nurses at the bedside and out in the community. Nurses can also continue their education and work as Nurse Practitioners or in management positions. There are so many avenues that stating that you want to go into nursing no longer means you have a traditional route ahead of you. I hope this book caused you to laugh, cry, and think because in medicine there is a lot of each to go around.
If you read this and you are still on the fence as to whether or not you want to take the plunge my advice is to stop wasting time. Time will not wait for you and before you know it another year will pass you by filled with should haves, would haves, and could haves. In that year you could have been one year closer to completing your goal. Take this opportunity to challenge yourself and make a conscious decision to progress towards your goal.
I never thought of nursing school or my career choice as an easy endeavor. I would be doing you a disservice if I told you it was a piece of cake, but as my grandmother always said nothing worthwhile comes easy. Nursing will challenge you mentally, physically and emotionally. Plan to work hard. Plan to strive for more. Plan to succeed. Again I thank you for taking the time to take this journey with me and I hope that the end of this book marks the beginning of your new journey.
Best wishes,
Your friend in nursing
Kevin, RN

I Think I Can
Beep, Beep, Beep…. SMACK!!! I can’t believe it is 4:45 in the morning already. I am so tired I feel as If I have ten pound weights on each one of my eyelids. I wonder if I can set my alarm for fifteen more minutes and still make it in time for clinical. I look to my left and my wife is still sound asleep in the bed. Looking up at the ceiling I begin to contemplate to snooze or not to snooze, that is the question. 4:51 and I’m still in the bed wondering if my commute will really take the full 40 minutes or can I grab another 5 minutes because I know I will be the only car on the road. 5:00 a.m creeps up on me like a ninja in black and my cell phone alarm goes off with a message on the screen that reads Get UP NOW!!!
I finally muster up the energy to get out of the bed and navigate the rocky terrain of clothes on the floor and the pointy furniture to the bathroom. Where is my uniform?
