4 Steps to Healing
()
About this ebook
This simple self-help book on addiction was based on my vast experience counseling substance users and their families for over thirty years working as a GP in the poor suburb of Mithells Plan in Cape Town, which has a population of over a million people. If you: a) are suffering from an addiction; b)are related to someone with an addiction; c) are interested in addiction; d) counsel substance users or e) are going through an emotional crisis then this book is for you. It will help you to deal with your problems in a calm and mature way. The book brings hope to desperate families and people afflicted with addiction in a simple easy to read style, without any medical jargon.
I urge you to read the book regularly; put its teachings into practice, and watch yourself changing for the better like so many others have. DR Robert E Rapiti, MBBS; FCFP; DCH; DMH: MBA
"The book, 4 steps to Healing is brilliant in its simplicity, addressing drug users as well as their supporters. Lay drug counsellors and practitioners should find this book very useful. DR Rapiti touches the core of the solution when he appeals to the Power within each of us to deal with the challenges in our life in a spiritual but practical way. What makes this book so attractive is that it does not use complex medical terminology to get the message across. This book should be prescribed reading for all learners, at the lowest possible grade, and for their parents."
DR Alfred S Liddle, Family Physician, Cape Town

FOREWORD
BY MARK R.H. KLEINSCHMIDT
I t is with great pleasure and an honour for me to write this attestation on Dr. Robert Rapiti, a medical practitioner of note with an MBA to his credit.
Dr Rapiti’s website reveals that, "He sees himself as a champion of the people trying to get a fair deal for his patients when it comes to healthcare. This is a fact. It was his conscious decision to open his medical practice uncompromisingly in Mitchells Plain, and not in the
leafy suburbs" to cash in on the more affluent patients.
Dr Rapiti has purposefully avoided the jet-set mansions and practiced in Mitchells Plain for the past 30 years, where he has established himself as an institution
and philanthropist. He avoids the spotlight and gives of his expertise and time unselfishly.
After 20 years of personal encounters and experience with those suffering from substance abuse, Dr Rapiti has documented a stark and seminal account in his book, 4 Steps to healing
. Avid readers of his frequent contributions to the daily newspapers may have caught a glimpse of his material on drug abuse.
Where others have failed, Dr Rapiti has managed to capture the essence of the rehabilitation process to assist drug users and those affected by the abuse in his book. It is succinct and free of medical jargon or senseless rhetoric, yet the coherent step-by-step approach to fight the scourge is easily digestible by the reader.
Dr Rapiti’s 4 Steps to healing
is a must have for every household and I salute a ‘son of the soil’, so passionate about his subject with his latest offering. It is a pity that those in authority do not always heed Dr Rapiti’s good advice.
MARK R.H. KLEINSCHMIDT is a former Principal, De Duine Primary School, Lotus River and an elected Mitchells Plain role model, featuring in the book, "Mitchells Plain—A Place in the Sun"
Testimonies from people, who benefitted from the 4 Step Programme
1) I have been struggling with two addict sons for over 30 years, and in that time, there wasn’t a support group that I hadn’t attended. It is only after I attended the 4 Steps programme I realised that I am not the user and that I am not responsible for what my children do. I got back my life and I am still happily working at 70. Thanks to the 4 Steps Programme.
Maureen, Home nurse, Cape Town
2) I joined 4 Steps for two months, and in that short time, I learnt to be more assertive and I became more confident to speak in big groups. I am pleased to say that I now run my own group and have added meaning to my life and to those that I counsel.
Ethel, Nursing sister for mentally challenged
3) The 4 Steps Programme changed our view towards the disease and gave us the tools to equip ourselves on how to deal with our son and his addiction. Thank you for introducing us to the 4 Steps programme.
Sheryl and Derrick.
4) My life was a total wreck before I was introduced to the programme, I was always fighting with my son. Today, I handle things in a calm and civilised way, and I get along better with my son after applying the 4 Steps Programme even though he is still on drugs.
Florence, Cape Town
5) I have attended several groups in the past 15 years because of my son’s addiction to drugs but
