CHAPTER ONE
O ver the past few years, we’ve watched our family grow and prosper. The children Frances IV and Catherine were now eight and seven years old. They were a handful and very much spoiled. The older Catherine got, the more she looked like me before the surgery. If Clarice had any questions in mind if I was truly Cathy, my dear daughter removed that suspicion. But Clarice never said anything to me about it. I guess she would be afraid as to how her son Frances would react, so she held her peace.
Little Catherine was fond of her grandmother and enjoyed hearing all of her stories at bedtime. The two spent countless hours with each other, when she would visit. Clarice had a nickname for her; she called her Alley which was short for her middle name Alexandria. I however called her Cat, short for Catherine which Clarice despised. My beautiful daughter was growing tall, had beautiful green eyes and blonde hair like Clarice. I could tell that at a young age, she was becoming vain or having that Elliott pride. Always primping in the mirror and brushing her hair. Clarice would take time with her and mentor her, as well as the two would have their tea time together. They were two peas in a pod!
As for my son Frances, he was tall, dark and handsome just like his father; mirror image to say the least and enjoyed sports. His favorite sports were soccer and swimming as he belonged to his school’s swim team.
Though Grandmother Clarice lived in New York, she made every attempt to visit us here in Europe. She could not stay away from her son or grandchildren even though she had others from Tranice and Laverne.
I hardly ever see my husband as he always maintaining business deals and acquiring hotels and resorts. Personally, I feel we have enough… but his hunger for success is becoming overwhelming, always trying to prove himself and to his mother. This is not the marriage I envisioned and he’s far from my perfect Alex that I knew and grew up with.
More importantly, I fear my children are growing wicked by the influence of their grandmother. But as long as she continues to reside in New York, I may have a chance with her not interfering with the upbringing of our children… Frances & Cathy.
I only see my husband six months out of the year, with his traveling and building new House of Elliott hotels. But when we do see each other, it’s passionate and he devotes his attention to our children and me. After all these years, he still makes me blush and feel adored.
His gentle kisses are sweet and sensual… I’m still in love with him.
The holidays are approaching as the children become restless with the notion that Christmas is right around the corner. Cathy has already placed her orders; tea set, baby doll, lace dresses, ribbons, and puzzles. I think the puzzles are more for her and Clarice. They both spend countless moments putting puzzles together. Now as for Frances, his presents are more elaborate; Game station, bike, skis, hockey jerseys and money. Frances loves money just as much as his father does.
For me, it’s pearls… I love beautiful ivory colored pearls!
Our family has spent the past four Christmas in Spain, by choice of Frances for we can have our alone time together.
Christmas in Spain; where the weather is warm, and there is so much for the children to do. Getting away from the cold climate of Astoria and spending quality time with my husband and children is the best present for me.
This Christmas I have a special gift to present to Frances… another addition to the Elliott family. I’ve been holding this secret now for about six weeks, and now am starting to show. The kids know I’ve been feeling under the weather, but I told them it’s a stomach bug.
Not sure how I’m going to manage three children, I may be forced to employ a nanny. I wonder how Cathy is going to feel about having a younger sibling. She’s been the spoiled baby of the family for the past seven years. As for Frances, he’ll be fine as he will always be first born son and grandson.
Our last day in Astoria was on Christmas Eve, when we all gathered together for our family dinner and gift exchange. This particular year Clarice did not attend do to being a little under the weather. Cathy was saddened that her grandmother was not here with us, be as for me, I was happy.
Dinner began at six o clock and the cooks served our traditional Christmas feast which includes:
Roast turkey, roast goose, roast potatoes; vegetables, Brussels sprouts; stuffing; chipolatas, cranberry sauce; with dessert of Christmas pudding (plum pudding) and brandy butter. Not to mention my homemade rolls.
Directly after dinner the children immediately went to the library and waited for Frances and me to arrive to exchange and open our gifts.
Cathy always goes first and hand out the gift to everyone, first to her brother Frances, then to her father and finally me. This has been our little tradition that she enjoys doing. After everyone opened their gifts, Frances handed me mine. He said…
This is for you, my beautiful wife
I smiled and took the beautiful medium size box and kissed his soft gentle lips.
Thank you sweetheart
as our children giggled.
The wrapping was exquisite and far to pretty to even open. But I did.
Oh, how beautiful honey
It was a wooden hand carven jewelry box.
I hope you like it sweetheart? You’ve outgrown the other two already
Then he kissed me and gave me a hug.
I looked at him and said…
This is for you dear
and I handed him a large envelope with a bow attached to it.
He gave me that skeptical look, with one eyebrow raised and said…
What have we here? I hope it’s not divorce papers
as he laughed.
He slowly and meticulously opens the envelope. To his surprise it was an ultra sound reading and photo, showing me being six weeks pregnant. He smirked and said…
You’re expecting?
No Frances dear, we are expecting
Then he stood up and hugged me and said to the children…
Let’s propose a toast to your mother… were having another child
As soon as he said that… Cathy yelled out
The little bug… mother is having a little bug
We all laughed, and toasted our eggnog with each other. And I said…
Yes sweetie, mother is having a little bug
I could tell by her happy expression, that she could not wait to tell her grandmother. So I had to stop her from giving away our family secret so early.
She was heading straight for the phone to call her, until I said…
Cat, what are you doing?
I’m calling grandma! to tell her the wonderful news about the little bug
No Cat! Let this be our secret for now… okay?
She looked bewildered and said… Okay mother, I’ll wait
and poked her lips out at me.
Not sure what I’m going to do. The stress of raising two children was overbearing, and now a third. I may need a nanny and I sure in hell don’t want Clarice’s input on a nanny. Our taste are totally different as I would like someone younger, to be able to keep up with Cathy.
So after we celebrated and opened the remainder of the gifts, the children retired for bed. As for Frances and I, we stayed up for a while talking about the baby. He was very pleased with the idea that we were expecting another child.
After a few hours of chatting, we finally retired to bed to prepare for our upcoming trip to Spain.
The next morning while we were all preparing to leave for Spain, the phone rang and it was Clarice. The first thing she uttered was…
Congratulations darling, on the new baby
I rolled my eyes right away and thought to myself… Cathy must have called her anyways.
Good morning Clarice! And thank you
Cathy told me you were looking for a nanny?
I could feel my eyes get big then I said…
Frances and I talked about it briefly, but had not decided
Well Lucy, should you decide to get a nanny. I could refer someone to you… or I could stay with you for a while and be your nanny
Just her mentioning that; gave me the creeps. No way would I have Clarice be my nanny. Grandmother is worse enough.
Thank you Clarice, but Frances and I have it all taken care of. As a matter of fact, we are about to leave for Spain… care to join us?
I said reluctantly.
No darling! I’m still in the US and won’t be there until New Year’s Day. Anyways Darling, send my son and grandchildren my love and have a great time in Spain
