    Intro

I n one night, at the hands of a mad woman, everything changed. Our home burned down with all of our material possessions destroyed. A woman, who I entrusted with my children, tried to kill them and my family. My cousin is dead by the hands of this evil person, and the one lady that I despised the most, would be the one who saved us all – Clarice!

As I lay in the hospital bed trying to wrap my mind and process all this, it doesn’t make sense to me. Watching my husband dealing with this tragedy breaks my heart even more so, and now she’s dead. I can’t believe that my nemesis for the last several years of my life is dead. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

But out of all of this tragedy, my children are alive and safe. That I am grateful for, as baby Eric gets stronger by the hour.

The doctors and I have decided that it would be best for me to stay in the hospital for at least another two weeks, so I can regain my strength and allow my injuries to heal, before traveling and starting my new life in America. This is going to be difficult because I have never been separated from my children like this. What a way to start the New Year – bedridden and away from my little darlings, Frances and Cathy.

Frances had been gone all morning as he and the fire inspector, along with the insurance claims representative, inspect the property to assess the damages and cost. Not sure what to expect when he comes back. I just pray that the museum, which is the original House of Elliott that his father built, was not damaged in addition to the Hotel. If anything happens to the museum, he will be devastated I’m sure.

I turned the TV off because the fire was on every major channel as Breaking News, with our home being shown as a towering inferno as the aftermath of the massive explosion. Thank God my children aren’t here to watch this tragedy unfold.

About an hour later I overheard the nurses chatting outside my door as one said, Oh my God, she died! This was after some news bulletin. Before I could turn on my TV, my phone rang and it was Frances.

    Yes dear, where are you?

Lucy, I’m sorry I didn’t call you sooner. But Tranice is here with me at the police station.

    Okay, sweetheart, is everything okay?

No, Lucy! We just held a press conference. You may want to turn on the news and I will explain the rest once I get there.

Okay dear. I will do as you wish. I hung up the phone and watched the special news bulletin.

It showed the blazing five alarm fire and a picture of Clarice. The red scroll at the bottom of the television read, Clarice Elliott has been named as one of the fire victims and is presumed dead.

Immediately I began to cry as I watched the news, glued to my television. This just can’t be happening. Not like this – And certainly not Clarice!

Tranice and Frances were being questioned by the media. Tranice took the lead addressing their concerns and accepting their condolences on behalf of the Elliott family. She was strong and broken at the same time. Frances had more of a stern look of concern about him which troubled me.

Moments later, Frances arrived back at the hospital. I was sitting up in a chair holding our baby, waiting for him, waiting to console him for what would be the second time of losing his mother.

The door opened. He walked in, standing there for a brief second and then held me tightly.

I’m sorry sweetheart, I am truly sorry about your mother.

He never said a word! Then finally let go and held our son.

Helplessly, I stared at him holding our child as our silence spoke volumes.

    CHAPTER ONE

A fter our moment of silence he turned to me and said,

Lucy, funeral services for my mother will be held in New York, and then her body will be transferred here until we have a mausoleum built for her and my father.

Okay, I can go with you.

No! You and the baby need to stay here until you are both strong enough to travel. I will be fine!

    Did they find her remains?

No, but Tranice is willing to close the case now. It’s the strangest thing, as if she’s given up.

And you Frances, have you given up?

I really don’t have much of a choice. Both sisters are insisting on closing the case.

He walked over to the window, just staring out – thinking.

    Frances, when are you leaving?

Tonight my love. Tranice has already flown back to make the proper arrangements. I will be heading out tonight and should arrive tomorrow.

And you are sure you don’t want me to go with you?

I’m certain my love, you need to stay here and take care of yourself and our son.

    He stayed with
