    Chapter One

O nce upon a time there was a forest, one not too far from where you live. The Sioux Indians named it Tokeca Makoce , meaning strange earth. The massive forest consisted of lush woodlands, crystal-clear streams, whispering meadows, and steep cliffs that jutted outward. They were all part of a very special mountain, a mountain full of ancient secrets and mystical powers that defied the laws of nature. In this part of the world, bears were friends with bunnies, wolves hung out with squirrels, and mountain lions ran with deer and antelope. In fact, in Tokeca Makoce, there were no threats or dangers among any of the animals, and they all spoke the same language.

Most importantly, this forest was the home of a bunny named Sonny, a squirrel named Merle, and a skunk named Hunk. Merle was the brave, adventurous one and always went first when exploring new places. Hunk was the curious, witty one, with lots of ideas and thoughtful thoughts. Sonny was the cautious and safe one. He often pointed out the possible dangers to Merle before entering a new area. All in all, they made a really good team and even better friends.

Sonny, Merle, and Hunk were a lot like most kids their age. They’d wake up late for school, grab breakfast as they scurried from their dens, and have trouble waiting for recess. They counted the minutes till school would be over, tried to get out of doing their chores, and then spent the rest of their time playing and exploring. Every day they met at the giant oak tree in the center of the fun place, where most of the other neighborhood kids went. There were places to hide, vines to swing from, rocks to climb on, and hollow logs to play in. It was all beneath the canopy of the biggest oak tree on the mountain. The boys would meet there, maybe join in on a game of tag or hide-and-seek, and what happened after that was always a new adventure.

Hey guys, Hunk yelled as he got to the play area, where the other two waited. "Sorry I’m late. Doing
