The wind was getting stronger, and the old house creaked and groaned with each gust. The first drops of rain tapped on the windows, as if asking to be let in. A summer thunderstorm was about to break.

A lone, elderly man walked the length of the living room, staring longingly through the window at the dark, distant forest. A few more moments, and the rain would come pouring down, lightning would flash across the sky, and the thunder would make the house shudder – wary…  It made him uneasy to be home alone in such weather. The doors were locked, the windows shut tight, but it was still unnerving.

The floorboards creaked, the house creaked, and the old man’s body seemed to creak in unison, keeping time. Many years had gone by in this house. The sounds and smells were all the same, reawakening old feelings and memories…
