A Day To Remember - Charlene Townsend
Chapter One
Once upon a time on a mountain not too far from where you live was a very special forest, quite extraordinary really. For you see many, many moons ago Tokeca Forest and everything else upon Mt. Wakahe had been changed by an Indian chief. The legend says that Chief Gray Wolf asked the Great Spirit to make all the animals on the mountain live in peace, speak the same language, and watch over one another. From that day forward all has been as the chief requested. Each animal was a friend to all others including a skunk named Hunk, a squirrel named Merle, and a bunny named Sonny.
Merle was the leader of this little group and went first almost everywhere they went. Hunk was the idea and question guy in search of good answers, and Sonny was their danger ranger in charge of safety. He could sense when there was something wrong by the way his fur stood up and his tummy felt. The three of them lived in the same area, went to the same learning center, and spent almost all their time together. They made a great team and even better friends.
On most days, the boys went to the learning center for lessons, did chores when they got home and then spent the rest of the day just being guys and doing what guys do. This particular day was different though, this day they had no classes and no chores. This was going to be a day to remember. As soon as they were done with breakfast they met at their usual spot under the big oak tree and the adventures began.
This is going to be a great day.
Hunk announced as he approached the other two.
Why do you say that?
Sonny asked.
No lessons, no chores, and I got extra berries and nuts for breakfast.
Hunk informed them, Yep, life is gooooood.
Okay, so what do you guys want to do first on this great day?
Merle inquired.
We haven’t been to the caverns for a while.
Hunk suggested.
Oh yeah, that would be a great place to start.
Sonny added.
The caverns were a set of chambers full of unexplained geological wonders. They were carved into the inside of the mountain by thousands of years of erosion from the constantly moving underground water. There were waterfalls, mazes, tunnels, caves, slides, geysers, and other unusual formations. A guy could spend all day there and only see a small part of it. Like the rest of Mt. Wakahe the caverns were full of miracles and mysteries that could only be explained by legends and nature. It was an amusement park with endless possibilities and fun. There were three main caverns with multiple rooms full of breath taking marvels. All three of them were joined together with stone tunnels, passageways, and a long stone slide. The caverns also had the best tasting spring water on the whole mountain. There were even stories claiming the water could be used to heal those who needed it. Legends say an Indian medicine man once used it to save the life of his chief. It was a great place for young boys to make new discoveries and have a grand adventure.
That sounds good to me.
Merle replied.
Awesome.
Sonny said. The caverns are one of my favorite places to go. It seems like it changes and has something new every time we go there.
And with that being said the boys headed out with Merle in the lead. As usual the boys did many things along the way. They talked about secret hideouts, new treasures, fun games, friends, their families, and other things young boys like. They skipped small stones across Mirror Lake, rolled in the tall grass, jumped over logs, and snacked when their tummies got hungry. The trip to the caverns was a long one but well worth it.
The biggest cavern was called Misting Cavern and it was higher up the mountain than the other two. It got its name from the way the ceiling blew a fine mist of water every few minutes. This was where the boys always started when exploring. In this cavern, there was a pool of water that gave the illusion of being a mile down when you peered over the edge. In reality, when you stuck your paw in it, you could feel it was only a few inches deep. The boys discovered its true depth when they tossed a stone in it the first time they were there. Another unexplained phenomenon was the waterfall of light; its crystal-clear water shone brightly as it cascaded down the west wall and then mysteriously disappeared when it reached the floor. No one quite knew for sure where the light came from or where the water went. It was another part of the mountain’s magical wonder. There were also glowing pillars that illuminated the inside of the caves with hues of pastel colors, while rose and peach colored quartz sparkled in their own reflection. There was a massive stone formation that resembled a bear
