School’s Out
In a very small town near a lake that is surrounded by ancient limestone, there lived a young boy named Michael. He was like any other boy; he liked sports and playing with his friends and all of the normal things a boy enjoyed, but he especially liked going on adventure hikes around the lake near the town with his best friend Alissa. The two friends would spend all day walking around the lake and countryside just talking about what they saw along the way and quite often letting their imaginations run away with them. They wondered what it must have been like long ago around their favorite lake. They imagined cowboys and Indians and all kinds of animals. They thought so far back that they were wondering what kind of dinosaurs may have roamed around the area long ago, before man existed.
One Sunday afternoon, Michael and Alissa were excited about going to the lake because it was summertime and the water level at the lake drops every year exposing a round sandy beach that was surrounded by the limestone bordering most of the lake. It was their favorite swimming hole.
Every year they walked a little bit further in the summer to swim in the crystal clear water and go on new adventures. They had not yet been around the entire lake yet, but every year they tried to explore a new area. On the way to go swimming, Michael suggested that they hike through the woods near the swimming hole up a very steep hill to get around a big cliff rock just down the beach from their spot.
Alissa was concerned and asked, Isn’t that a long hike? Do you think we will have time before it gets dark?
Michael replied, Yes, we will have plenty of time. It’s a short cut to more adventure. We always have time for that.
So they climbed the hill and went through the woods to get to the other side of the big cliff rock. As they got to the other side, they saw what they thought they would never see, a better swimming hole! The beach was bigger and it blended with flat smooth limestone that surrounded it. There were rocks to jump and dive off; it was beautiful, and it was all theirs.
Surely nobody else comes here,
Michael said. They stood on the limestone silently staring at the new place they had found when Alissa broke the silence yelling, Last one in is a rotten egg! Last one in is a rotten egg!
She sat down and hurried to take her shoes off. Michael quickly followed and got his shoes off first and started running across the limestone. Alissa was close behind and it was going to be a close race. Suddenly Michael shouted, Stop!
Alissa almost ran over Michael. He had stopped so fast she said, Are you crazy? I almost fell on the rock that would have hurt.
Michael replied, Never mind that. I thought we were the only ones that have been here, and look, here are some footprints.
They both looked at each other feeling a bit disappointed. Then almost at the same time they both realized the same thing and said aloud, Those footprints are in stone!
They were both confused. Alissa walked around examining the nearby ground as Michael just stared at the prints. Then Alissa yelled, Come here! Look over here!
Michael was amazed even more when he saw Alissa pointing down at what appeared to be a dinosaur footprint in the stone. They walked back to
