    Dedication

Dedicated to all the women in this world, young and old. This is for you.

To my mother, for helping me find my path and supporting me at every step. I love you.

To my friends—you are my heroines and saviors.

To him, for being my light in the darkness.

I love you with all my heart.

    Preface

I believe everything happens for a reason. Sometimes it’s hard to understand why especially when something happens that is very difficult. I have come to realize though that when even the smallest amount of good comes from a very difficult experience, it is worth it. If I can help just one person with this book, then my experience is worth every tear I shed. That being said, this is my story. That is all it is. It is not a manual. It is not outlining the appropriate way to handle a situation but simply putting forth one path that was taken. I hope you read my words and take away only a perspective and not any kind of hate or malice. I hope you can find it in your heart to understand why I took the path I did even if you don’t take the same one. And I hope that my words bring you comfort if you find yourself in a time of struggle.

There was an intricate web of blood vessels that surrounded the embryo supporting it. I could see its unbelievably giant eye that took up most of the head. It was so small, so delicate. Its only nourishment was the yolk. Its only protection was the developing amniotic sac. I was literally holding its life in my hands.

Zooming in with a higher power, I watched the blood cells themselves move through the blood vessels. I could pick out individual cells. I tried to count them but quickly
