    Introduction

If you’ve been a Christ follower for any length of time, I’m sure you’ve hit stagnation in your walk at some time or another. I’m sure you’ve said to yourself, I’m not satisfied with where I am in my walk. There has to be more. It is often this displeasure that sends you on a search for more. For me, it was more truth that I sought.

I don’t know about you, but just because I’m a Christ follower doesn’t mean that every question I’ve had about what I believe, practice, and accept as truth has been answered over the years in church. The Word says in John 1:17, For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. In cities all over America, there are squabbles about where the Ten Commandments (the law) can or cannot be displayed or whether the law can be taught in public schools. I was very familiar with what the law was; I needed to know more about grace and truth.

When I began to learn more about grace and truth, the first subject I needed more clarification on was communion. During my many years as a Christ follower, occasionally, on the first Sunday of the month, I would hear a pastor or his designee mention that we could be healed while taking communion. This led to my study of communion. I taught my small church group the lessons I’d learned and they learned a lot as well. Each chapter in this book lays the foundation for the next, so stick with me. My prayer is that you, too, will have a better understanding of each element of Holy Communion, why we even take communion, and how we can be healed by taking it.

The Bible teaches many different ways to receive healing: the laying on of hands (James 5:14), by faith or acting in faith (Matt. 9:20–22), and when we pray believing (Mark 11:24). These methods of receiving healing have almost exclusively been practiced in evangelical and charismatic circles. Healing takes place when the Word of God is taught and believed and the power is present (Luke 5:17). Of course, there also is receiving healing by no explanation other than that a miracle has occurred.

But there is another method of receiving healing that the church only lightly touches on, if at all, during the course of a year: communion. My contention is that communion is one of the most neglected ways by which we can be healed.

Sincerely praying the prayer I’ve placed at the beginning of each chapter with an open heart will allow the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you into all truth. Also, I led my small church group in taking communion after each lesson. You may want to prepare the elements and have them available to partake after you read each chapter.

What a blessing you will experience by the end of this book!

To my mother, Idella, who is loved and missed, healed now and rejoicing in the presence of Jesus.

To my small church group family—Betsy; Cooley; Gary and Jackie; William; Vernor; Janis; Jimmy and Theresa; Sheila; Lloyd; Linda; Joseph and Michelle; and Darlene—who are always encouraging and supportive of my teaching.

To my husband, Fred, who is the love of my life and my partner in the work we do for the Lord. I appreciate the sacrifices you make while supporting my work to become published. You are the wind beneath my wings.

To all the other Christ followers out there who are as ordinary as I am, who may not have been to a foreign mission field to crusade and are unknown worldwide but love Jesus. You don’t pastor a megachurch or any church at all. Your life has been to minister to the lay folk in the body and people in your community. You have had supernatural experiences, revelations, dreams, and visions and have shared those experiences only with a few very close people. I want you to know that what you do matters to the Lord.

To my children, Timothy (Yvette) and Marsha (Kirby), and grandchildren, Denesha, Tramaine, Timothy Jr., and Deidrianna, I love
