In memory of my grandfather, L.S. Marinho, who not only was the first International Correspondent in Hollywood, California, for the first Brazilian film magazines Cinearte and A Scena Muda, in the 1930’s, but also gave me the passion for writing, and for my loving family: Nadege, Newton, Christian, Danielle and Flávia.

    Introduction

This book was written with the objective of inspiring the reader to pursue the dream he carries in his heart. Why? Because there is a great chance that this is the only way to find the happiness and prosperity one truly aims for.

The prosperity to which I refer is not only financial. On its own, it is not worth anything if the desires of the soul are not fulfilled.

The use of the word prosperity is much wider as being prosperous involves being successful in the eight areas of the greatest human aspirations: relationships, career, finance, education, love, recognition, having children and health.

It might be a very ambitious dream as each of these areas greatly impacts the life of one person. I believe that true happiness lies in the balance of all these aspirations and it is likely that few people reach that balance—if it is considered possible. This might be the great mystery of life: simply for being itself the reason of life.

Although our society puts great emphasis on money, and it is not difficult to understand the importance of being financially independent and well-off, I would not be telling anything new if I said only money is not everything in life. Money represents only one area in which we wish to be successful.

In order to find full happiness, it is also important to pay attention to the other aspirations previously mentioned. Man is a social being and, as such, needs friends, good relationships and contacts. In the internet era, communication is nearly instant. As we cannot and do not want to live in isolation, our network of relationships is of great importance to provide room for exchanges.

The world lives of exchanges held at all these levels. Good relationships result in good business deals and these deals result in success. This is an example of a simple chain in which the importance of relationships is made clear.

It is also easy to realise how the area of career is intimately related to finances and to relationships, as it is in the professional field that we can, most of the times, see the human potential flourish with their full beauty—mainly when we give in to the appeals of our essence and agree to see it expressed.

It does not matter if the potential has been shaped as a spaceship which will take us to the moon or in the melody of a beautiful song: the beauty resulting from creation is of equal value and the journey may be only one.

Education, though not always granted attention or true value, is as important as the other areas. After all, good educational background is the foundation of great societies. A nation, whose citizens are not well-educated, is easily dominated and cheated. There is room for all types of influences, mainly the bad ones. Knowledge broadens the horizons and brings the possibility of exploiting innate potentials.

The mind without knowledge is like a computer without software. It can either have very limited performance or turn into a dangerous weapon as it is fertile soil to any influence.

When it comes to love, it is also not difficult to see that we desperately need to be loved. The greatest love we can aim at is the one for ourselves, as this is the only way to have love to give. We cannot give what we do not have, therefore, love and respect for ourselves is the beginning of it all. Love is like the air we breathe. Nobody can live or grow up without being loved. The form it takes is not important but it must be present, nourishing our lives

Love is one of the forms of energy to which the human mind responds faster when stimulated. It is so powerful that even cures are achieved through the power of love. I do not refer to imposed or selfish love but to unconditional love.

The need of a human being to be loved and accepted is so grand that we all wish to leave something that registers our journey and our experiences in this life. Having children and caring for their happiness is, in a certain way, to provide the continuity of oneself and this is one of the most important human aspirations.

Between fame and recognition, there are different levels and it is obvious that not all of us need fame to be happy. However, being recognised in the world in which we live is essential and we start searching for our space and way of expression very early, as this recognition is capable of nourishing self-esteem.

Finally, there is health, as nothing which was covered previously can be fully satisfied if we are not healthy. It is important to point out that physical health and mental health are connected in a subtle way; the true master of all masters is our mind.

When our mind is healthy, our body is too according to the ancient Latin proverb—mens sana in corpore sano. Balance needs to be reached in all areas or aspirations of life in order to achieve a healthy mind and that is where the cycle reaches a closure.

The moment we are born, we enter the cycle of life bringing along what is called soul or essence. This soul or essence will search for the best way to reach its own expression. However, the soul is free and is not tied to the world of the five senses. Communication with the concrete world is reached through the language of dreams, which are born and live in our hearts.

In order to express our essence and join the cycle of live harmoniously, it is necessary to listen to this inner voice. Even if we do not know where it comes from, we are able to listen, feel or use our intuition to understand what our soul seeks, which is the realisation of our personal dream.

The intention when writing this book was not to reveal any secret, as secrets are personal and each of us has to find out about our own. However, throughout the story I will tell, which was the base for me to find and discover my own secret, I will try to show how and why I believe this is the path everyone should follow.

One day, man invented the plane because he dreamt of flying. Man reached the Moon in the 20th century because he dreamt of doing so for hundreds of years. Our destinies were changed because man dreamt of having electric lighting.

Dreaming is part of human nature. Though we are not always conscious that we have dreams, they propel us to conquer everything we wish. It does not matter what we are doing today, there is always a dream, desire or wish behind our choices. Dreams are the engines of our attitudes.

You might be thinking: I have no dream. I have to say I am sorry, but this is not possible. Desire, wish, fantasise, imagine, and idealise: these are dreams. Some are greater and need more time or more dedication to come true, others are so simple and ordinary that we do not even realise they are dreams. Without a doubt, we came to this world bringing many dreams with us and our greatest happiness is flowing towards them—to our success!

    Chapter 1

    The end

When you change the way you look at things,

the things you look at change.

    Wayne Dyer

Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.

    John F. Kennedy

    September, 1997

    City of São Paulo, Brazil.

At the end of the afternoon, as usual, I would meet my husband after work at my mom’s home. We would pay her a quick visit and then go home together. As soon as we got there, we sat by the kitchen table and chatted about our everyday issues while my mom prepared a delicious coffee for us. We did not talk about anything important and I don’t remember noticing any difference in my husband’s attitudes. Even though, in the last years, he always seemed very tired, nothing attracted my attention in that particular day. We might have chatted for an hour and, then, after saying goodbye to my mom, got into the car and left. After five minutes, my husband said:

    – I will definitely need your help as I have something to tell you . . .

In twenty years of marriage I have never heard him talk so seriously and I was certain that something really serious was about to come. In a fraction of seconds, my mind started searching for answers: Why is he speaking to me like that? What might have happened? What does he mean when said he needs my help? Help, what for?

I felt sick. I was taken by the weird idea of saying: no, please, don’t tell me anything. I cannot help you and do not want to make any sacrifice! It was like something, maybe my unconscious mind, knew the truth and wanted to postpone, just for a little longer, what destiny had for us.

Though I felt like postponing everything, I had no idea of what my husband was going to tell me. Looking out of the window, I thought: He might have fallen in love with another woman. Why not? After so many years of marriage . . . . It happens to many couples. This must be the reason. But then, what kind of help does he need? Help to forget the other woman?

    – I was fired—He said, without beating around the bush.

Suddenly, those words, which were not part of the delusion I had just created in my mind, interrupted my thoughts.

    – What?—I asked, confused, trying to understand what I had just heard.

    – That’s it, I was fired—He confirmed.

    – What do you mean by fired? What are you talking about?—I asked in disbelief.

    – I am saying that they asked me to leave, the company asked me to leave!—He answered, a bit impatiently.

That is not possible, I thought. There was something really awkward in our conversation. Have I really understood? So, he wasn’t in love with someone else?

    – But I thought you . . . Did they fire you? When do you have to leave?—I wanted to know, suspiciously.

    – I left today—He said, without further explanations.

    – Today? But when did they tell you?—imagining he had been informed about the situation beforehand and had simply forgotten to tell me.

    – Today, they told me today.

Our conversation was dragging and, obviously, I was not helping him. On the other hand, my head was spinning with so many doubts and questions.

    – But did they tell you just today? Don’t you have to work during your notice?—I thought this was the procedure.

    – No. Actually, the company chose for payment in lieu of notice, which means I stay at home—He spoke naturally, as if it was a financial transaction.

    – I cannot get it. How can they fire you? Did anything happen?

    – No—he was straight and dry.

    – It is not possible. Don’t you have to go back? What happened? What did you do?—I asked trying to find an answer.

    – Changes were carried out in the company’s organogram and they terminated my position. They don’t need me any longer—he answered with disdain, for himself and for the company.

    – They cannot terminate the position of general manager—I affirmed feeling a bit revolted with the situation and, at the same time, with a certain feeling of superiority.

    – They can and that’s what they did, my position no longer exists—he said, seeming to agree with the decision taken by the company.

Our conversation started going in such a direction that, at a certain point, I felt as if I had been fired and he, as general manager, was there to defend and preserve the interests of the company.

He spoke as if he was still part of the board of directors and in favour of the directives defined previously.

    – Well, then, they must have offered you something else, another position maybe . . .—I insisted starting to feel tremendously revolted.

    – It is all over, I don’t work there any more—he answered coldly.

    – It cannot be true. This is not fair. After so many years . . .—I argued hopelessly as he seemed so intransigent and not willing to discuss the matter further.

    – It is not a question of justice. While they needed me, I was paid to do the job I did. They do not owe anything to me and I don’t owe anything to them—he added.

Oh my God! Who is this man speaking so coldly and insensitively?—I thought. I could not understand and nothing made any sense. In this entire situation, there certainly was something I did not know and that he did not want to tell me. No one is fired overnight without a very serious reason.

I remembered my childhood, when more than once, my mom told me stories about scandals which happen in various companies where she worked. Financial frauds discovered and the staff involved fairly dismissed. Has my husband been dismissed for a fair reason?, I
