Delores Oliver Baker

She is a native of Tuskegee, Alabama and a retired Chicago Public School teacher who taught students at all grade levels. She is certified in Business Education with a Master of Science Degree in Education acknowledged for her completion of the Board Certification and was successful National Development Program from Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Teachers Union. In her career, she delighted in teaching and counseling students from the ages of one through seventy years of age. When teaching preschool and kindergarten students, she was amazed at how enthusiastic they were about learning. As she watched them learn and grow, "Saluting You" became a reality. The poem actually captured what was happening in the class room that year. Where she taught, teachers were required to plan a play or skit for their students to perform on stage once a month. As the author moved from grade levels, "The Graduates" was written at a time when students were experiencing test burnout and tons of anxiety. They delighted in brainstorming on how to turn the poem into a rap style performance. Suddenly, all of their test burn out and anxiety disappeared. She enjoys communicating with people from all walks of life. Throughout the stages of her life, she has been able to reach people where they are in the form of writing articles, class reunion speeches, condolences, plays, poetry, prayers, resolutions, stories and graphics.

    A Period of Mourning

    By Delores Oliver Baker

When I was going through a period of mourning, you were there for me, but I couldn’t hear you pleading to console me. You see, when losing a mate, there is a grieving period that must take place. My mindset wasn’t on developing a new relationship. There was a need to bring closure to this period of bereavement.

This closure is about the life that we shared together. I have to relive the good times, as well as the hard times alone, cherishing our precious moments we endured through all kinds of cold, rainy, sunny, and stormy weather.

You see, the healing period must take place; otherwise, it will be impossible to develop a healthy new relationship. My husband and I made a marriage vow to love and cherish one another until death do we part. Although, he has gone home to be with our Lord, I still need time to reflect upon cherished memories.

It is said that time will heal all wounds.
