Denise Hilliard
I was a young wife and mother at the age of 21 with my daughter Ariel; by age 23, I had my second and last child, Donald. I've worked in corporate sales most of my adult life, except for a brief period where I threw my hat in the ring of entrepreneurship and decided to open up a daycare center. I did so because I wanted to be available for my children when they got home from school. I wanted to have dinner already prepared, be able to take them to their soccer practice, basketball practice and dance classes, which in some cases started before 5:00. Corporate life doesn't allow you that luxury. Owning my own business allowed me the flexibility, so that I could be a mother to my children when needed. I closed the business immediately after my divorce and returned to corporate sales full-time. I began to work with my daughter in a management capacity as soon as I came to the realization that her skills in dance and musical theater were above average. She had a genuine love and interest in what she was doing. I wanted to guide her career, not push her. I knew that as her mother, I had an emotional attachment to the situation that a professional manager would not have. I also knew that there wasn't anyone else that would have her best interest in mind as much as I would. For me, she wasn't simply a client, she was my daughter. Over the years I’ve been asked on numerous occasions questions regarding how I managed my daughter’s career. Questions like, “How did you start?” “What should I do with my 5 year old who I think is talented?” “When did you first realize your daughter was that good?” “Is this going to take up all of my time?” “Does my child need an agent?” “How much does it cost to start?” “What is my role as manager?” etc. After answering all of their questions and several others, it became apparent to me that I had accumulated a plethora of information regarding the ‘business” of entertainment from a mother/manager perspective. Upon this discovery and after a nudging from one of my friends, I began to put together a seminar designed to assist parents who were interested in managing their children; halfway through writing the seminar, I realized a book was about to be birthed. My goal in writing Momager Notes is for parents who sincerely want to manage their children's career, be able to do so without the blinders on. You will learn how to recognize what your child’s talent is, help them develop a strong foundation in that talent and then learn how to properly manage it. I would also like for you as a parent to know what will be required of you and your child from the early stages of training, straight through to their first big break and beyond. Hopefully, in Momager Notes, I will answer all of the questions that would be “Momager’s/Dadager’s” might have. I am divorced, my children are now adults and I currently reside in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. I am a proud graduate of Rutgers University, where I obtained my liberal arts Bachelors degree with a concentration in criminal justice, "after" the children were raised. As of this writing, I'm happily developing a Pageant that I hope to launch the Spring of 2012, designed for children and teens who aspire to have a career on Broadway. The objective is to connect, expose and inspire them to an art form that they might otherwise never consider as a career option. I'm also available and quite enthused to be able to speak on the subject of parent/child management whenever the opportunity presents itself.
