    30 DAYS IN PSALMS

    Psalm 1

    1 Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,

    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree

planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so,

but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

    5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

    A Tree Planted by Water

Psalm 1 sets the tone for the whole book of Psalms. It tells us that we are blessed for following the Law, and there are consequences for not following it. The rest of the one hundred and fifty Psalms build on that theme.

In the Hebrew Blessed means happy or content, but its based on the person doing the right thing. We can live blessed lives in Christ by doing the right thing, or being obedient. We can also be blessed by avoiding those people who don’t.

David lays out three people we should avoid in order to be happy. Stay away from the advice of those who are wicked. Don’t hang out with those who willingly sin, or have discussions with those who mock others.

We are blessed when we meditate on the law. One who meditates on the Word lingers over what scripture means and searches the Bible for truth to apply to their lives. When we dive into God’s Word and do what it says we are like a tree planted by water. We prosper because we are connected to a constant source of life that brings growth.

Contrast that with those who don’t delight in the Word of God. They are like chaff that is blown away. Chaff is the excess hull of a wheat kernel. It is much lighter than wheat. When farmers throw it into the wind it separates the two. The heavier wheat falls to the ground, but the chaff blows away. Wicked people are driven by any wind that blows their way because they have no roots.

We have a choice as a follower of Jesus Christ. We can dive into the Scriptures, or we can look for daily wisdom elsewhere. Psalms tells us which one will be more prosperous. Be a tree that is growing and producing fruit.

    Psalm 2

1  Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,

against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 "Let us burst their bonds apart

and cast away their cords from us."

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.

5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,

6 As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.

7 I will tell of the decree:

The Lord said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you.

8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

9 You shall break them with a rod of iron

and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel."

10  Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.

11  Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

    12  Kiss the Son,

lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

    The Coming King

In battle scenes in a movie, there is always a time before fighting starts when the leaders of the evil forces gather together to plot their plan of attack. They are sneering and raging as they prepare to take on the under-manned forces for good. It makes for good movies, but it is also based on real life. One day the

nations will rage against Jesus and plot his demise. They will be conspire against him declaring how they will divide and conquer. The world will agree and many in the church will tremble, but God will be laughing at them while he sits on the throne of heaven.

Psalm 2 is part of a group of Psalms called Messianic Psalms. These specifically refer to the coming Messiah. Chapter two is one of the clearest indications that

a future savior will one day come and rule the earth. The armies of the earth can declare their power and even proclaim victory over Christ’s bride; but one day he will return and with the power of his word, defeat them and establish his reign.

This should give every believer hope. While it looks bleak right now one day it will all change. In the twinkling of an eye the enemy will be defeated and peace will reign on earth. Isaiah tells us that the lion and the lamb will lay together and the child will be able to stick his hand in the hole of a viper and nothing will happen.

Blessed are those who take refuge in the
