    Camilla - Isabelle Corners

    VEGAS FANTASY #5

    Camilla

    By Isabelle Corners

    Chapter One

    (Danny)

It helped me sleep at night to tell myself that Dave forced my hand. Of course I never wanted to do this to my brother and I never would have even considered betraying him if he hadn’t gone off with that whore.

I laid in my bed thinking about how I couldn’t even remember her name, just the feelings of disgust she put in me. Jealousy didn’t seem like the right word but what else could it have been? I just wanted my brother back. The more he pushed me away, the more I knew I had to fight.

I was proud of myself for being icy through and through, but I cared about my twin because we raised each other. Things were tough growing up and we had to stand up for one another. We were best friends. It hurt to lose the one person I thought I could confide in to some floozy.

There was no going back. Mikey had everything mapped out, at least until – what was her name? – I remembered, it was Vanessa. Vanessa ratted us out to Dave and put a big dent in our plans. Maybe I was a little grateful for the stalling, but I had to accept the fact that nothing could be delayed forever.

It was another sleepless night, filled with doubt and frustration, so I sat up in my bed and turned on the side table lamp. I touched my fingertips to my temples to give a little pressure that’d clear up any headache that may come rolling in after nights of interrupted sleep.

My feet touched the floor and I moved over to the wall mirror to look at myself. I looked like a fucking mess. My blue eyes were bloodshot and weary and I needed to shave, I was beginning to look like my brother. I almost saw him in the mirror instead of myself. Why the fuck was everything a reminder of him?

I couldn’t accept that I wasn’t emotionless enough to carry out an assassination on my twin. I was always the one who didn’t care about anything, but I was also always the one who looked out for Dave. He looked out for me too. Those times were over, and he proved it through falling for a spy. Vinny’s spy, at that.

Mikey would kill me if I backed out. Not with words, he’d literally have me fucking hanged, drawn, and quartered. He’d probably tell everyone too, making an example out of me. I told myself that I didn’t want to back out anyway, but if I ever so much as showed a little bit of hesitation or a sign of changing my mind, Mikey would be there to shoot me right between the eyes.

I had to get used to his men meandering around the house. They all had guns and none of them got along with my guys. I heard arguments through the halls at stupidly late times.

I checked the clock to see what time it was and it looked like it was nearly morning anyway, so I decided I’d get up and take a look around. Someone was shouting outside, causing me to roll my eyes. It wasn’t about anything in particular, just another fight between the idiots standing guard.

After getting dressed in a smart pair of black slacks with a cream colored dress shirt, I pulled on my sports jacket and went to open the bedroom door so I could yell at the cretins outside.

Fucking shit, all of you need to shut up! I snapped.

They all went quiet at the sound of my voice booming through the hallways. I folded my arms over my chest. What’s got all of you so fucking excited at five in the morning anyway? I demanded to know.

One of the men approached me and I glared into his eyes.

He said, Mr. Mikey’s here, boss. Uh, he had a guy following your brother and his girlfriend but he lost them and then went AWOL. We found him though, so Mr. Mikey’s ripping him a new one. I’m serious, it’s a blood bath.

Really? I sighed. Alright, I’ll check it out.

It was only a few days since Dave and his oh-so-lovely tart disappeared. I never should have let a fucker like Saul look after her. I should have known his sensitive side would come out.

As far as I knew, the guy Mikey was now torturing had been killed by Dave. At least that’s what I’d been told when he didn’t come back from following them. I didn’t care what happened to the nameless son of a bitch. He was just another one of our lackeys who couldn’t put together a twelve piece puzzle if his life depended on it.

Hey, Mikey! I yelled. My other brother looked up at me as I stood at the top of the stairs. Who’s this son of a bitch?

Mikey had practically killed the guy already but there was a little life in him. It wouldn’t be long until Mikey shot him to death, though. That was the only kind of mercy he would show.

I saw a grin appear on Mikey’s face and he said, Who cares? He’s dead meat anyway.

Fair, I laughed. So I guess we don’t know where Dave’s at, huh? He could be out of the state at this point, for all we know.

We can’t have that. If he gets away he could come back in two, three years with an army ready to mow us down. He’s a charming fucker. Mikey took out his gun and fired it at the henchman.

I watched the bullet cause a final jolt of breath and then there was nothing else. Nice shot, I joked, trying to hide my dislike for Mikey. Point blank.

Mikey just laughed at me. Hey, Danny. Why don’t you go take a look for Dave? You’re at least a little more competent than these assholes.

I really didn’t want to but I knew that if I refused, Mikey might think something was up with me. I inhaled deeply and exhaled sharply. If you say so, Mikey. It’s a big fucking city, though. You think I can find him in all of this? He could be anywhere.

Look on the strip. Word on the street said that’s where he and his bitch were headed, Mikey informed me. Could be outdated by now but I’m confident you’ll be able to spot them if they’re there.

I shrugged. Alright, it’s something to do.

Good luck. Mikey turned to a couple of bystander guys under his employ. Get this mess out of here. He was referring to the corpse. After that, get back to your posts.

I went back to my room to get my handgun. I assumed that I was going to need force if I was going to bring both of them back alive. I didn’t know if that’s what Mikey wanted but if they were on the strip it’d be hard to just shoot them in front of all the civilians.

As I went to jog out the front door, I passed by Mikey. Have fun staying at home and doing nothing, I sneered.

Disrespect me, Danny, and you’ll find yourself in Dave’s boat, he said to me.

    Mikey had a certain tone
