God’s woman, that’s what I want to be. His woman, for all the world to see Him living inside of me, joyfully. God’s woman, not following the crowd. That’s not what life is all about. Once He extends His hand, reveals His plan, and I know wherever He leads me that’s the place where He needs me. Whether the task is great or small, I’ll give to Him my very best, my all and all. As His love empowers me to be God’s woman, for the world to see.
(Lyrics from God’s Woman
. sung by Brenda Nicholas.)
Tears stream down my cheeks each time I listen to this song. One phrase in particular reminds me of the past: not following the crowd.
For the first thirty-five years of my life, I followed the crowd. Actually, I was one of the leaders. I had my own plans and goals. I was only interested in what would benefit me. One goal was to receive recognition for my achievements. This propelled me into action. I became a people pleaser. At the same time, I experienced frustrations with my life as well as the actions and expectations of others.
From somewhere in each of our hearts, a longing arises: I want to be wanted. I want to be loved. I want to be accepted and appreciated. I want someone to care. I want to be a woman of significance.
We’re all looking for the same thing. We all need someone or something to fill the void in our hearts.
All the recognition and praise that I received in our community was never enough. I needed more. I didn’t know what void I was attempting to fill. In fact, I wasn’t aware that there was a void in my life.
I wasn’t experiencing joy or peace. In fact, my nights were filled with eerie dreams of the world coming down and squeezing me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but inwardly, I was being pressured to perform for others.
Women of all ages and walks of life are experiencing similar emotions. The world is trying to squeeze us into its mold. Society tries to make us into women we were never meant to be.
What is this mold? Look at magazines, fashions, TV, and the expectations of others, and you will quickly be aware of what the world wants us to be. We are bombarded with images to which we compare ourselves. The role models we’re given are tall, thin, beautiful, young-looking, rich women who live in big houses and have maids and nannies. They have careers while being mothers and wives all at the same time.
Women are pressured by the daily routine of juggling home and career while trying to keep up with children’s activities. They find themselves in the family vehicle, transporting children to school, soccer and baseball games, dance lessons, tae-kwon-do, piano lessons, and more. The task of maintaining some semblance of order is further complicated when the husband works long hours and is involved in his hobbies of golf, fishing, hunting, and so on. He has little time for the wife or children.
Amid all the frustration, discontentment, and confusion—and looking for some peace and stability in life—we get caught up in the feel sorry for me
attitude and world’s lifestyle decisions.
To this mold, we must say no!
Romans 12:2 tells us: Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world
(Living).
Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold
(Phillips).
Why shouldn’t we follow the ways of the world? Because God has a better plan for our lives, one that is positive, productive, and fulfilling.
I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11)
If God has a plan for each of us, then the next question we must ask is: How do I find the plan?
The Word of God (the Bible) provides wonderful examples of godly women. One is the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31, the picture of the perfect woman of God.
What does it mean to be God’s woman?
• Has God at the center of her life
• Trusts and relies on God
• Walks in His plan and not her own
• Leads a disciplined life of obedience, commitment, and self-control
• Extends love and compassion toward others
• Displays God’s character
• Is filled with joy, peace, and victory
For many women, this seems to be an overwhelming goal, but God tells us in Matthew 6:33 to seek … first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
What things? Whatever we need: self-image, healing, prosperity, peace, love, and the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22–23.
As we commit our time and lives to God, seeking Him, His ways, and His character, we will see our actions and self-image change.
The Word of God will reveal to each of us what changes are needed in our lives. We must use His Word as a scale or mirror by which to measure our activities and attitudes.
A Missing Ingredient
One of the missing ingredients in the lives of women today is the needed discipline in many areas of our life..
We give in to the temptations of spending unwisely and follow fads based on what we view on TV and what we read. With all the distractions, it’s difficult to set priorities. Books and movies glorify the shopaholic as humorous and appealing. A new pair of shoes is seen as the answer to boyfriend troubles, depression, and a bad day at work. Those shoes are only a band-aid on the symptom. Those feelings of discontentment and lack of self-worth have a deeper cause.
As we discover and follow the plan of God, there is a noticeable change in our priorities, and we experience the positive results of discipline. A joy wells up inside, because our thoughts have been changed to God’s thoughts. Discipline brings the joy, which isn’t based on people, places, and things. Joy is an emotion down deep in our spirit, one we receive from God.
Discipline isn’t a word we like to hear. It conjures up images of hurt, pain, and sacrifice. It’s like hours on the treadmill and dieting but not attaining the desired goal. I have discovered that discipline moves us out of our comfort zones, and great rewards are received.
Before we go any further, let’s take a look at what discipline means to you and me, as women of God.
Discipline, according to The American Heritage Dictionary, means:
• a training that develops self-control, character or orderliness
• efficiency, also the result of such a training or control
• control in self
Now, that’s not so hard, is it? Discipline isn’t punishment. It’s training, guidance, and teaching administered by God in a loving, caring manner and delivered with His grace. Discipline doesn’t have to be painful. As we allow God to work in our lives, it will be a pleasant and rewarding experience. God has placed within our lives the Holy Spirit, who is our teacher, our guide, and our helper. The loving gentleness of the Holy Spirit enables us to accept the required discipline.
From the definitions of discipline, you and I can draw the conclusion that we are to be trained and led. Then, by applying this knowledge to our lives, we will begin walking in the plan, or should I say, walking out that plan.
The choice is ours.
God’s Plan
The world today looks at outward appearances. It’s important to take care of every area of our life: spirit, soul, and body. God looks at the inner beauty, which He has lovingly and generously placed within us. His desired plan for you and me is to set an example before our family and friends through our actions and attitudes.
Inward beauty is a result of the Word of God dwelling, growing, and being active in our lives. When God is allowed to work and make us into the women He desires us to be, our inner beauty will be bright.
Outer influences cause us to become the world’s woman rather than God’s woman.
Again, Romans 12:2: Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary
