Miracle in the Jungle - Annaleah Taylor
Chapter 1
Hello, China
Jacob watched sweat drip off his forehead and onto the red Global Love Ministry
shirt he had tucked into a pair of brown pants. The day was sweltering. The jungle was like one giant sweat box. The path he was walking was rough, rocky, and steep; thank goodness he was wearing a strong pair of hiking boots, Jacob thought as he leaned against the walking stick he was carrying. You good back there, Rachel?
he called over his shoulder. Though the day was hot and the trail rough, he felt good—alive and rejuvenated. All the troubles he and Rachel had faced in the past seemed far away. Isn't China great?
Yeah, great...just great,
Rachel said, out of breath as she climbed the trail to Jacob. The blue Global Love Ministry
shirt she wore was soaked with sweat. Just great,
Rachel said again, taking off the brown sun hat she was wearing and wiping her forehead with her left forearm.
Jacob smiled. Even though Rachel was sweaty and tired, she looked beautiful. He loved the way her hair sat in a ponytail and her exhausted face glowed with a beauty he couldn't put into words. I bet you're glad I made you get those boots,
he teased Rachel.
Rachel looked down at the brown pants she was wearing and patted them with her right hand. She leaned against the walking stick in her left hand. I'm more grateful for my pants. These bugs are something awful.
No worse than back home.
Jacob smiled. He tossed his eyes around the voice with excitement and enthusiasm. I can't believe we're in China. This is really cool, Rachel. At first, I thought you were insane for getting us involved with Global Love Ministry. I mean, let's be honest, the name sounded really girlish and a whole lot of sissy.
Rachel rolled her eyes. Guys,
she sighed. Jacob, Jesus is love and we're supposed to spread His love around this world. Global Love Ministry is named after a direct mission ordered by Jesus Himself. And that mission is to love.
I get it.
Jacob smiled. He drew in a deep breath of hot, humid air. We're really close to the Vietnam border...I'd say maybe no more than seventy or eighty miles. Just think, we're in a part of the world that could swallow us whole and no one would even know.
That's not very reassuring, Jacob,
Rachel complained. We're hiking to a very remote village that has come under attack from a hostile anti-Christian group. This anti-Christian group is known to become very violent. We're not exactly safe, you know.
I'm sure Mr. Davidson wouldn't have sent us to China if there was any chance we would get hurt,
Jacob told Rachel. "Besides, Mr. Davidson said the anti-Christian group that's been pestering the village we're hiking to hasn't been seen in months. All we have to do is hike to the village, deliver the check, hang around for a few days, and then it's off to Shanghai for a little
