    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to my good friend and brother in Christ, Tommy Glass. I had the privilege and honor, as many others did, to know him. He and his wife Mitzi have made a significant impact on our lives, and I can’t thank them enough. I praise God for our times together. If you met Tommy, you know his big heart and love for others. Our memories of him will not fade, because they bring us joy. Thanks for the memories, brother, I know you are still worshipping and giving God glory. Thank you, Jesus, for Tommy!!

    Ch.1 – THE SEARCH

It has been eight years since the protest that made changes in the community of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where Pastor Jacob Jones and his wife Dee lives and lead a church body. The light of Jesus filled the people and opened the doors of every member’s heart to speak peace and the love of Christ to the people at the protest. Since then, the church has longed to move even further into what God has for them. Jacob has felt that the church needs a new worship leader who can teach the people to worship and not just sit in the pews to be entertained by the choir. He felt the people were starting to be more focused on the singers during worship, rather than focusing on God.

As he sat in his office catching up on things with Bishop Williams, he thought about the days God started renewing the church and the direction that the church has been going lately.

Bishop, I'm very excited to be interviewing several worship leaders this week. We have a few people coming in today, and I hope God shows us quickly who we should choose.

Well it's about time, it has been a while since we had a worship leader, Bishop replied.

I know, and I don't know what to look for or how to even choose which worship leader will be the right one.

Just let the Spirit lead you as always Jacob. I know it’s going to be ok, you got it.

Some promising people are here today, Bishop. I  hope we can find the one that will push us into the new season.

We’ll be fine, Jacob. It is okay, God has us, He always has; we must continue to trust Him.

I know He does. So, how is your son, Joseph, doing? Jacob asked, changing the subject.

Well, workwise he is doing well. He just has a lot on his plate with his kids and Mary in addition to working with Brother Travis, I'm surprised he hasn’t turned into the Joker.

Yes, my brother is one of a kind. He has his ways, but he can be serious when he wants to be.

He sure can; he's grown in the spirit. I am glad he had a job for my son. Joseph’s son, Jonathan, has been a struggle for him though. Being divorced and still in love has been hard for Joseph, especially with shared custody of two kids. I knew it was going to be rough. He has been avoiding Katrina and me, but I believe God will see him through it. If he would just come back to where God is calling him!.

Yes, and he will Bishop. He's always seen us through; we must stay in prayer. Well, are you ready to start some interviewing?

Yes, I am! Who is our first contestant?

They both laughed as they pulled out their papers to see who was on today’s list. As the day goes on, they meet several people but are unsure if they have found that one.

Well, Bishop, I guess we'll call it a day. It's been a long one.

Yes, it has been, a really long one. Did you feel any potential from this group?

I didn’t feel the Spirit urge me in either way, Jacob answered.

So, we'll continue to pray, wait, and I will see you tomorrow. Don’t get discouraged brother; God has already sent the right person, we have to keep our eyes and ears open.

Yes sir, we will see tomorrow Bishop. God is faithful, and He is with us as we are waiting.

They prayed together and then headed home to meet their families. Both were tired from a long day of interviewing for the worship leader position.

Jacob walks in the door to the sweet aroma of food.

Mm, Mm, something smells good! Jacob exclaimed.

His wife Dee walks into the room to greet him with a hug and a kiss.

That’s your favorite food, Love. There is some roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, cornbread and for dessert, apple pie, she said with a smile.

Oh, what have I done to deserve such a blessed meal from my beautiful wife, Jacob said as he followed her to the dining room where he saw three more beautiful smiles.

His children shout, Hello daddy! and ran to him for hugs.

Just being you, Man of God, and the hard work you do for the Lord and this family. Now sit down and bless this meal and you can tell me how the interviews went later.

Dee wanted him to just relax and enjoy the family. Jay (Jacob, Jr.), Michelle and Nicole were growing impatient to eat, because they knew that apple pie was for dessert.

Jacob blessed the food, and they enjoyed the kids as everyone shared about their day.

After Dee got the kids to bed, she joined him in the living room.

Hey there Man of God, what are you doing?

She noticed the stress on his face as he went over the papers.

I don’t know Beautiful; I don’t know where to start. I know that a lot of these people have great voices, but I’m not sure any of them is who God has for us. I’m no worship leader, how can I choose the right one? I’m a pastor, what do I know about what a worship leader should even be like?

    Do you still trust God?

What?! Jacob seemed confused by her question. Of course, he trusts God.

Do you trust God?! she asked again.

Yes, I do. You know I trust God.

Then trust Him with this. I know your heart is to do His will, so let’s pray about it and leave it at the feet of Jesus.

    Just leave it?

Yes, leave it. You’ve never tried working it out on your own before, so don’t start now. Look, you like to worship, right?

    Yes, I like to worship.

And you are a leader, right?

Yes, I am, so what are you saying?

I’m saying, you know how to lead so you will recognize a leader, and you love to worship, so then you can recognize a true worshipper. Let the Holy Spirit lead and guide you. Put your troubles at the feet of Jesus and…

    Just leave it.

    Now you got it.

You always have to remind me who I am and who God is in times like these. Thank you, Woman of God, you know I get in my flesh sometimes, I am glad I have such a wise and strong wife.

The next day Jacob and Bishop interviewed a few more people, and they were getting a little doubtful. They were down to their last three interviews, and things weren’t looking good.

Who do we have next, Jacob? Bishop asked.

Mr. Tommy Glass and his wife, Mitzi. I pray God will show us the right person soon; we only have a few remaining on the list, Jacob said. I was hoping we had found the right one by now. I would rather be calling and canceling interviews and have this over with.

Well, let’s keep our trust in the Lord and His timing, just be patient, said Bishop.

Jacob went to get Mr. and Mrs. Glass. As they walked toward him, he felt a peace that he hadn’t experienced during the entire interview process.

Come on in Mr. and Mrs. Glass and have a seat, Jacob said.

    Thank you, Tommy replied.

Mr. Glass we have interviewed several people, and we still have a few more left. So, I will get to the main question, and you can give me your answer.

He was feeling a little weary from the process.

Ok. you can call me Tommy, and this is my wife, Mitzi. We are pleased to meet you.

Great, we are pleased to meet you too, said Bishop.

Tommy, I feel a worship leader is like a pastor, and my question is, what do you feel is the responsibility of the worship leader? Jacob asked.

Tommy paused and thought about how to answer. Then he responded with confidence in his voice.

To me, a worship leader’s responsibility is to help grow the body. It is to sow into somebody else, to sow into their gift, you know? Um, you know the devil was a worship leader, right? Tommy asked.

Yes, Jacob replied, thinking, where is he going with this.

Amen, said Tommy. "The devil was cocky, had an attitude, and for some reason,

I don’t know why, but that same spirit runs heavily in people who sing. I don't know if you have noticed that."

Jacob thinks back to the people he interviewed yesterday, how many felt prideful and self-absorbed.

I don’t want to generalize anybody, Tommy continued, but a lot of musicians tend to have attitudes. So, what I do to crucify the flesh, is to look for someone that I can teach. I would look for somebody that I can give voice lessons,  teach a little music theory too, and we can talk about the Spirit of God. I’ll pour into them; I’ll give them space in the service, you know what I mean.

Yes, I do! Bishop said in excitement.

I know they won’t be perfect, they’ll make mistakes, but I will be patient with them, because I have to remember that it is not about me, it’s about the Kingdom of God. Amen.

    Amen!! Bishop and Jacob exclaimed.

So, you know it’s about getting the work done. Praise God!! Tommy shouted.

Praise God! Amen brother!! Jacob was feeling the Holy Spirit move as Tommy talked.

So, as you know, there are little things in the Bible that we can apply, like when you read 1 Corinthians chapter 12:1-7. There are so many principles there for a worship leader. It talks about how the body is knit together and how you shouldn’t think of yourself more highly, but in the proportion of faith, and minister that way. I know you want a worship leader who can sing, and lead the church through the service, but I want to find people with gifts that can further the kingdom, not to further myself, but to further the kingdom. To see them grow and mature and become leaders of worship, Tommy said in conclusion.

Brother, I believe you’re the one we’ve been looking for.  What say you, Jacob?

Jacob looked at Bishop and then back at Tommy and said, Mr. Glass, you are our new worship leader if you are interested.

    Yes, I am.

Well then at service tomorrow, I will announce you as our worship leader and let you meet everyone if that's ok.

Well, I would like to spend this Sunday with the church I am currently attending, so I can say my goodbyes to them.

Ok, that's fine. We usually have choir rehearsal on Tuesday, but you can set it up however the Spirit leads you to with the members.

That’s great, said Tommy. I can meet them this Tuesday, and we can get to know each other. Tuesday is a good day for rehearsals, no need to change it. Thank you both for the trust and opportunity.

"Thank you, Brother, for coming. We are excited to see where God
