End of the Road - Annaleah Taylor

    Chapter 1

    Bad News Mayor

H ow long do you think it'll be? Jacob asked a gray-haired mechanic covered with grease. The mechanic reminded him of Goober fromThe Andy Griffith Show.

Rachel nervously watched the mechanic lock his eyes on Jacob's Jeep. Her gut tightened. We're kinda in a hurry.

Hard to say, the mechanic finally answered. He spat a bit of tobacco out of his mouth and onto a piece of concrete stained with dark patches of oil. I just change the tires and oil. Mr. Smith does all the repairs.

Jacob looked at Rachel, then walked his eyes around the exterior of Smith's Garage. The garage was settled on the corner of a side street near the downtown district in a little town called Pine Willow. An open garage door leading into a single work bay was open, allowing Jacob to see that no vehicles were waiting to be worked on. Oh, why, he thought, did his Jeep have to break down in front of a rundown garage with a tow truck that looked older than time? And even worse, a hard sleet was falling from a cold, dark, gray sky, making the situation worse. When will Mr. Smith be in? Jacob asked. He tugged on his brown leather jacket.

Rachel watched the mechanic shrug his shoulders. She sighed and glanced down at the pink coat she had decided to wear for the day. The coat was managing to keep the cold at bay, but for how long, she couldn’t say. The temperature was quickly dropping. It would be snowing by night fall.

Hard to say, the mechanic said again. Rachel noticed the mechanic seemed at ease with the cold weather and sleet, though he was dressed in a thin, gray work uniform.

Is there another garage in town? Jacob asked, slowly feeling his ears turning to ice. At least Rachel had on a pink ski cap, for which he was grateful.

Nope, the mechanic said, spitting another round of tobacco juice out of his mouth. Pine Willow is a small town. The closest garage will be in Duluth.

Duluth, Jacob moaned. So much for making it to your aunt's house on time, Rachel.

Where is Mr. Smith? Rachel asked, praying for patience.

At the town hall, the mechanic said. He pointed toward town. A lot of people are at the town hall fussing with the new mayor. I would be there myself but I'm waiting for Mrs. Jones to bring her old clunker in for an oil change in a few minutes. The mechanic looked down at Rachel's left hand and saw her engagement ring. You kids aren't running off to get hitched, are you?

What? Rachel exclaimed. She turned red as a cayenne pepper. No...Jacob and I are engaged to be married. We're going to visit my Aunt Charlene in Duluth. My aunt broke her leg. We're going to stay with her for a week until my cousin Maye arrives.

I get to stay in the garage apartment, Jacob
