Chapter One

Anastasia picked up the leads and took a deep breath. This conversation was not going to be easy, but she was finally forced to admit that she had no other choice. Her father was bedridden in town at the doctor’s home and would be for the next six weeks with two broken legs. If she did not find help to hire for the cattle drive, her father stood to lose a fortune. But every person she had asked had turned her away, saying that they flat out would not help her unless Brody Calhoun gave his permission.

She snorted. Part of her wanted to ask if Brody owned everybody’s minds as well as half the town, but in reality, she already knew why they had circled around him. The one man she had publicly scorned five years ago for a chance at a big city life. To see what her mother had always loved and found more exciting than a Wyoming ranch. But it hadn’t taken her five years to realize she could not understand her mother’s attraction.

Returning home had not been easy. People in a rural community had nothing better to do but gossip and with each telling the tale grew taller. Her rejection of Brody Calhoun had turned into the worst thing anybody had ever done in life, and she would not be forgiven of her sin.
