INTRODUCTION
ALTHOUGH many books have been written and songs composed on the topic of love, we still have many people who know very little
about what love really is. While attending a sociology workshop in a higher learning institution, I asked a simple question; What is love?
I was utterly surprised that none of the one thousand students present gave me a satisfactory definition of love. Some people have even suggested that love cannot be defined.
Love is more than a feeling, more than an emotion and more than a sensation. The Bible emphasises that God is love. True love is God’s initiative and hence it is an expression of His nature and character. Every other affection outside God’s word is at best, conditional and at worst, a fake.
Many people get into marriage without understanding what they are doing or the kind of person they are partnering with. Essentially, marriage is a lifetime commitment that entails two people loving each other
so much until they are able to become one. However, God is the perfect matchmaker. May you allow Him to give you a suitable life partner who is custom made for you. Scripture says that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning
(James 1:17 NKJV).
You are probably about to begin one of the most important stages of your life— marriage. Marriage contains a unique and interesting potential. Marriage is the only game of chance in town where players can either win together or lose together. This book has been developed to help you decrease the risk element from marriage. We trust that as you read and reflect on the truths that I have shared, your present relationship will be strengthened and enhanced as an appetizer to an enriching, fulfilling, and growing marriage. I also hope that you will have a much more realistic perception of yourself, your fiancé, and your upcoming marriage.
Marriage is intended to be a permanent bond in which many needs are satisfied—the need to love and be loved, the need for deep friendship, for sharing, for companionship, for sexual satisfaction, for children,
BEFORE YOU SAY I DO
––––––––
the need to escape loneliness and have close company. Marriage ought to be a bond of love, reflecting the love Christ has for His people, a bond of sacrificial love where husband and wife become one.
This book seeks to guide you on how to locate that right partner and how to prepare for the next chapter of your life happily and joyously married. May God minister to you as you embark on an enlightening adventure through the pages of this book. Marriage is not a race. Do not rush to the altar. Build friendship, trust, and love.
Chapter One
BEFORE YOU SAY I DO
GOD recognises that it is your responsibility to prepare yourself for marriage. He will not do for you what you can and ought to do for
yourself.
The preparations of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD (Proverbs 16:1 NKJV).
Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
(Amos 3:3 NKJV).
Anyone who gets married without putting necessary instruments in place is headed for disaster. Before marriage, you must first encounter God. The most important decision is not whom to marry. That is secondary. The first decision should be to know the author of mariage—God.
If you do not know God, you are likely to marry someone who does not know Him either. A personal relationship with God is key to a successful marriage. Most young people spend months or years preparing for their wedding but spend little or no time at all preparing for their marriages.
Do not just prepare for your wedding. Prepare for marriage. Wedding is for a day but marriage is for life. Wedding is a ceremony but marriage is a lifetime commitment.
