Hacklyf - Vijay Poudel
Prologue
My story
"GOOD MORNING ALL,
Today’s thought is:
United we fall, divided we stand,
I would like to repeat it,
United we fall, divided we stand."
With these words, the school assembly broke into a laughter riot. There was a smile on the face of every attendant, except for the kid who had just delivered the thought. His face grew red in embarrassment. Even though he had realized his mistake, he couldn’t gather the courage to face the audience again to correct himself. Struggling to keep his eyes open so as not to let the tears make their way down, he swiftly stepped down the stage and hurried back to his place. As years passed by, he excused himself from speaking at a stage time and again. Ultimately, that incident became the last time that he ever spoke at his school assembly.
Sometimes, we are too young to bear such accidents and they leave a scar on our personality. Unless we act upon them, such incidents start defining our choices and course of action. As the kid grew up feeling that he has poor speaking skills, he found himself shying away from putting his ideas at forums too.
Things did not change despite him trying very hard until one day, while glancing through a local magazine, his attention was caught by an article which dealt with overcoming stage fear. He had read through various books on the same issue by renowned authors, but they had all failed to ignite the dormant confidence in him. For this reason, he was quite reluctant to go through the article, but his desire to overcome the problem pushed him to give it a try. It was an anonymous section written in Hindi language.
"The irony is, illiterate people in this country are addressing political rallies while the educated, who have so much to share, hide behind their self-made curtains of fear. The fear of being ridiculed and humiliated has won over the entire purpose of their lives".
Above are the lines translated from that article in the magazine. They are etched in my memory forever. I always bring them up during my pep talks. These words gave me the courage to face my fears, made me understand that life isn’t meant to live in awe of failures. It changed my life. Yes, I was the kid who couldn’t stand the pressure of speaking in front of my schoolmates and hid in a self-made cocoon, letting nobody peep into my thoughts.
I do believe that each person is different and requires a unique blend of words to have his soul touched. We don’t know where these words might come from, just as this unknown author changed my life through the unique choice of his words and instilled confidence in me. Perhaps, that is the reason why I am writing this book.
I believe this book will help you overcome one or the other such forces that have prevented you from unleashing your true potential so far. I write with the same belief that someday somebody will stumble upon my book and it will change their lives forever.
"Belief is the most supreme force that I have ever come across. It is the sole architect of whatever you achieve or become. Lose anything in life, but belief."- Hacklyf
A Journey Within
Discover Yourself
JASBIR IS ONE OF MY closest friends. We have been together for quite some time now. In college, he was one of the most sincere students, but he hardly tasted any tangible success during the first two years of the course. No matter how many extra hours he put in, he was unable to compete with the best.
We all go through a similar experience in certain stages of our lives where we find it very difficult to figure out where we went wrong? More often than not, we end up labelling ourselves unlucky, just as Jasbir used to. ‘I did everything I could, but I have been so unfortunate’ are the words that still remind me of him.
Why is it that makes us blame the stars? Is it because we fail to see the reason behind our failures and jump to such conclusions as that we have lost to fate and not our shortcomings, to make ourselves feel better. Well, let us not waste our time and energy figuring that out. All I wish to point out is that whatever may be the reason behind our failures, there is always room for improvement. I firmly believe that no matter how good or bad we are at something today, we always have the chance to be better at it tomorrow.
I knew I had a challenging task at hand convincing Jasbir. Perhaps his repeated failures had made my work simpler. He realized that to change the result, one needs to modify the perspective and methodologies that one has been sticking to. Once he became open to change, it didn’t take us much time to come to a consensus that we can improve ourselves with each passing day. But the next question that was bound to pop was ‘How do we measure our progress?’ I haven’t found anybody who can judge me better than I can myself. It is quite obvious however, that to judge someone, one has to be honest and unbiased. This is what ‘A Journey Within’ is all about.
After yet another unsuccessful exam, I asked Jasbir to jot down the things or areas in particular where he thought he could have done better. He promised me to be honest with his assessment. After an hour of introspection, he came up with a long list, to his surprise. The look that he wore at that moment spoke plenty of his realization. It was not just an honest encounter with his shortcomings that had touched him the most, but something else entirely. I feel great having talked to myself so honestly. I have not felt so close to myself ever before,
