The alarm clock rings, and it’s time to get up – brush your teeth, shower, eat breakfast, read the paper and head to work. Day in, day out. Most of us begin our day with this type of routine. Often we are not aware of the advantages of having a routine – what is even more questionable is the notion that we often have a morning routine, but no evening routine.
Routine = negative.
Wrong! All too often the word routine’ has a negative connotation. Many people feel trapped in the boredom of the daily grind and often take routine as something negative. In contrast, routines help us to better organise our thoughts and plan our day. So why not expand the morning routine to the evening routine?

What exactly are routines? Why do people have so many routines? What do they mean to us? Would we be able to live without them? Nearly everyone has a fixed morning routine, but our evenings often follow quite different patterns. What are typical morning procedures? Very few people have a defined evening routine. Why and what are the consequences of that? What building blocks are available to us that cannot only improve our evenings, but also the rest of the day? And what had we better avoid doing in the evening?
Why a routine is important
People have many routines and habits. Whether they are in their day-to-day or on holiday: we can easily think of endless amounts of routines that determine how we live. For example, when it comes to choosing a holiday destination or selecting a meal in a restaurant, we often prefer to fall back on what we already know we like. Are you one of those people who travels to Mallorca every year? Do you always order your usual Hawaiian pizza when you get take away? More often than not, routines and habits are given a bad reputation. This is certainly the case when we speak of bad habits such as smoking or drinking. We like to daydream about, and are sometimes even advised, to get away from our daily routines. But are routines the equivalent to boredom? Need they always have a negative connotation?
