About this ebook

In this book Healed from Broken, Victor Paul Haynes takes you on an incredible journey as he writes how God healed him of all the hurts of the past, including the traumatic effect of childhood abuse, alcoholism, inadequacy and an inferiority complex. A hatred for God and man consumed his entire being. Living in a constant state of disillusionment, drinking himself to the point of oblivion, he would wake up the next morning cursing the daylight that shone through the drawn curtains.
Life was to wield another crushing blow as on the 4th of August 2003, Victor sustained life changing injuries in a head-on car crash resulting in him being confined to a wheelchair. What seemed like the end for him proved to be a miraculous turning point in his journey to complete wholeness. Be prepared to follow the author through the chapters of his life story. You may laugh or cry but this is one book that you will not be able to put down. A MUST read!!!

Writing this book has been an incredible yet challenging journey. There have been many people who have encouraged me with their love, assistance and support. Without them it would not have been possible for me to have written this story in the endeavour to help others be set free and for God to make them everything they can be. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude of appreciation and thanks for all the individuals that made this goal achievable.

Pastor Robert King who inspired me to become an author.

Many thanks my friend for writing the foreword.....your encouragement has been invaluable.

Pastor Helen King for her great work on editing and professional guidance. Thank you.

Also for a brilliant job, thanks to Michael Haynes, our eldest son for proof reading and Jess Taylor for first edit.

Thanks also goes to my younger son Curtis Haynes for believing in me and cheering me on.

And last, but not least, my darling wife Lorain for her remarkable artistic design on the cover. Including the format of Healed from Broken. Thank you my love for your commitment and tireless effort.

A big thank you to all who are not mentioned here for all your encouragement, support and for cheering me on.

    Foreword

Recovering from trauma can be a lengthy journey which many are not able to complete. The effects of abuse as a child often last a lifetime. In these pages we journey through both these dark valleys through the author’s own eyes. A journey from rejection, disillusionment and life changing injury; through to hope and new found freedom in Christ. Woven between the pages is a constant theme to 'never give up!'Its honest, sobering, heartfelt story is at times a real eye opener. Paul shares many helpful insights which are bound to bring hope and freedom to those who may find themselves in similar circumstances. He offers much practical advice and this book is an encouragement to us all. This is one book you will not be able to put down.

Congratulations to you Paul. I know this wasn't easy for you to write as it required you to re-live some of your darkest moments in life. Nonetheless, you did it. Ultimately, you will leave a legacy for future generations to come, a legacy of hope.

    God bless you my friend,

    Pastor Robert King

    Delivered from Destruction

It was officially recognised as the hottest day of the year on the 4th August 2003. My wife and I and a familiar friend decided that we would make the most of the sunshine by spending the day out in a little village known as Usk in South Wales.  I am a city boy, born and raised in Swansea for the first twenty-one years of my life. A true ‘Swansea Jack’ living an active life near the Gower peninsula. So, I can honestly say that I didn't find the thought of spending the day in a village in any way appealing. But, while musing through the village there was certainly one point of interest that captivated my attention. From the age of ten I had always been a keen collector of oil lamps. Looking back, I can say that it was my mother that inspired this interest as she read to me the story of Florence Nightingale, well known as the lady with the lamp. I still enjoy reading biographies to this day. By the time I had reached my mid-teens I had built up quite a collection of these oil and paraffin lamps. That was until my pet Airedale, Sam, went about on a destructive spree and destroying all but a minority of my collection. Those quaint little shops in the centre of the village turned out to be a lamp collector’s paradise. I was truly in my element but it was time for us to return back to the car finding somewhere to eat before making our way home to Cwmbran. Cwmbran means the ‘Valley of the Crows’ in Welsh. I had been living there since marrying my darling Lorain on August 1st 1981. I would often joke about the name of the town saying that such a meaning can only sound like something out of a Hitchcock movie.

It was a most enjoyable day up to that point. No one  could have envisaged the carnage that lay ahead of us as we journeyed through another small Welsh village. I was sat in the rear of a Citroen Xantia reading a newspaper. My wife was in the front passenger seat directly in front of me. Even though I have long fully recovered from the physiological trauma I have to admit that it comes as no easy task for me to share my story. It was our friend who was driving who suddenly alerted us to the danger by crying out, Look at him! Frantically both motorists tried to manoeuvre their vehicles in order to avoid a head-on collision, but to no avail. Survivors of car wrecks have often stated that the whole event for them seemed to unfold in slow motion. While I certainly do not doubt the validity of their experience I have to be honest and say that such was not the case for me. I still have full recollection of a red speeding Toyota Hilux on a collision course with us. Though I do not recall being gripped by any sensation of fear, there was just no time to be afraid. It was my wife Lorain who took the full force of the impact. The Gwent police would later confirm that the combined speed of the two vehicles was 83 mph at the moment of collision. In spite of the fact that I was wearing a seat belt, I have a clear recollection of being violently thrown back into my seat after my head struck the roof of the car. It certainly felt as if I had been struck by a baseball bat as the belt locked about my chest. Thank God for seatbelts and the good sense to wear them, otherwise the outcome could have been so much worse. Everything seemed surreal in the aftermath of silence that was to follow such a sickening blow. No one in that moment uttered a word. Naturally my first thought of concern was for my wife as she sat motionless behind a shattered windscreen. There was also a strong acrid smell within the vehicle. Such details remain with me even now though they no longer trouble my thoughts. Regaining my breath, while yet physically numbed, I called to my wife, Are you all right Lorain? My thoughts were instinctively filled with instant dread when she did not reply. It was then that my training as a first aider came into the equation as I reassured her that I was qualified and would come to her immediate assistance.

Why wouldn't I when in my case there seemed to be no indication of serious injury. Please bear in mind that the nature of shock can be so misleading, as I was to find out for myself. One of the cardinal rules in first aid is to never move an injured party unless there is a clear and present danger e.g. as in the outbreak of fire. Only under such circumstances would such a course of action be warranted. Bear in mind that this rule also applies to oneself as well. No one can anticipate just what their reaction would be in such a time when life is thrown into the cauldron of mortal danger. We are all individuals which so often can determine our response. One could say that my actions were nothing more than futile as I had collapsed at the very point of exiting the vehicle. I did not realise that I had sustained a potentially life-threatening injury in fracturing my sternum. A significant amount of fatalities in road traffic accidents occur due to the internal organs being punctured through fractures. The heart and lungs are particularly vulnerable.

The truth of the matter is that I was in no position to help myself let alone save my wife. I have been criticised and called
