Chapter 1

I guess I'm lucky. Coming out to my parents wound up being far easier than I thought it would be. Maybe they already knew, I'm sure my mother did. We were on our last summer family trip before I was off to college. When we got to the beach house that we had rented every year and were unpacking I told my mom that, I kind of, sort of forgot to pack my clothes.

Mom lit up, she always did like the thrift stores. As she gleefully went through some clothes racks, looking for the right sort of things for me, I did, too. I approached her, nervously, with my selections in hand. Some things that I wanted to try on. She must've seen me out of her peripheral and grabbed a couple of items that she had on top of the rack, turning excitedly to show me what she had picked out. When she saw what I had in my hands, the smile left her face for just a moment and then it was back again, though it seemed a bit forced. Are you sure? she asked.

I nodded. I think it's time, I said. I tried to hide my nervousness, tried to put on a bold front. I wanted her to know that this was who I was and who I intended to be from now on. Slowly, she nodded. She quickly slipped her selections back onto the rack and looked my choices over. Slowly, her smile became genuine as she got into the spirit of things and it made me feel so much better.
