Kandi was not her real name. That name was lost to time, now, and even Kandi would not have been able to say with surety what it had been. That was back in the old days when Kandi had been boring and suburban. Back when Kandi had been a man.

The thing Kandi learned in her journey through this life was that it was always possible to reinvent oneself. And if you grew tired of the life you led, it was shockingly easy to blow it all up and become something different. And someone different, too. That was the magic of life. You were who you decided to be from one day to the next. So many are trapped in the routines they have set before themselves, a rut that grows deeper with each day so that breaking out becomes increasingly difficult. The walls of that rut grow higher when you're in it. You wake up to the same alarm, you dress in roughly the same way, you go to the same job, you come home again to the same house, maybe make love to the same partner, and then go to bed for the reward of doing it all again.

Once upon a time, that had been Kandi, too. She was in banking before she leaned down on the plunger that would explode her life. She had a small home and a girlfriend whom she made routine love to, and spent her weekends following sports and denying the most fundamental truths about herself. Kandi loved women. So much that Kandi wanted to be a woman, and not just any woman. She wanted to be fabulous. To be exceptional. To serve as a monument to femininity and power, and to help others find their way.

It was nothing more than a fantasy until she met Darcy. Darcy Case, hypnotist extraordinaire. Kandi met her when she was a he and he had wanted to quit smoking. Only under the hypnotic interrogation of what might have caused Kandi's desire to smoke, Darcy discovered the Kandi lurking within the uncomfortably masculine frame of the man she had been. And Darcy knew lots of delicious ways to coax that woman out, to give Kandi the wheel, so to speak. And once Kandi was in charge, the man she had been didn't stand a chance. And, of course, there was Renata, who proved that some magic was real and that the world was more mysterious than Kandi had ever suspected.

But that is a tale for another time. What mattered most was that Kandi knew that she could make a difference. And that sometimes you had to show someone what it was like to walk on the wild side whether they wanted to take that trip or not. And that is the tale we concern ourselves with. The story of Ben and Kandi, and a trip he never expected.

Ben Daniels sat in his office and chewed his nail in that way he did when he was nervous. He hated traveling. The trip to Vegas was a chore, and now he was sitting in the airport waiting for someone to update the status of the delayed flight. It was bad enough he had to fly commercial, but now he was forced to sit with the rest of the commoners while he waited for someone to get their shit together and get a plane on the runway that could deliver him back to the east coast. He could practically feel his expensive suit jacket wrinkling while he sat in the terminal amidst the rest of the passengers. Some of them were even wearing sandals, exposing their disgusting feet to the world. While he was far too young to remember the days of dressing up for a flight, he still pined for that time of greater civility and respect for one's fellow passengers.

Teeth gnawed on his manicured nails. He had tried to stop this particular habit, but nothing worked. It was a nervous tic, his therapist told him, as if that explained everything. Ben believed one could eliminate weakness if one could name it. Only his attempts to eliminate this nasty habit had been met with nothing so far but failure.

A groan came up from beside the board displaying departures and arrivals. Ben followed the list down until he saw the flight he was supposed to take was now marked with a new designation: CANCELLED. Of course it was, he silently fumed. He'd have to spend another night in a room that reeked of cigarette smoke and desperation, the two stenches he couldn't shake each time he visited Vegas. No, he promised himself. He had been in this cesspool of an oasis long enough. If
