    Chapter Four

    Paul pulled out his screwdriver and tightened the bolt on the new desk chair. He and his team only a little over quarter done with all the construction, but at least with a chair set up, they could sit if they really needed to. Or Rachel could. Not that he wanted to see her sit – he liked watching her stand. And bend over. Paul shook his head, sighed, and looked around at the first floor, taking a mental note of what needed to be done. Floorboards coated with sealant. Walls stripped of that awful wallpaper and fixed up. Railing and staircase tightened and potentially rebuilt. Check the poles and wall holding up the balcony area. Paul sighed. He hoped they would be able to finish everything by the time Rachel hoped to open. It could get tight, but he was a hard worker who liked to stick to his commitments.

    Rachel, Paul called into the employee store room. He knew he’d seen her come in here. He poked his head into the room and looked around. Hey, he said when he saw her standing in the corner leafing through a stack of papers.

    Hey, Paul, Rachel said, setting the papers down on a stack of cardboard boxes. One of these days, I am going to have a real desk instead of a bunch of boxes. What’s up?

    I just wanted to show you these final plans I drew up for the front of the store. Paul held up some blue prints and smiled. You know, these are probably the best blue prints I’ve ever drawn up, if I do say so myself. Paul grinned and winked at Rachel.

    You’re still so modest aren’t you?

    Always, Paul laughed.

    Rachel felt herself blush listening to Paul’s laugh. It was warm and comforting, familiar. She missed it. She missed the way they used to be able to talk to each other about anything at any time. Of course, he had Willow for that now. Rachel tried not to be jealous –
