The Septuagint (also identified as: LXX) is a translation of the old Hebrew texts along with the spoken language; it was made by approximately seventy scholars in Alexandria, Egypt, during the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphus from about 285 to 247 B.C. Some comparisons to the traditional Masoretic Hebrew text (after 1 A.D.) are also provided in this book.

Relevant Notes
Unless otherwise stated, all scriptures are quoted from the following:
o The True Bible Study Word Translation (TBS); Joshua chapters 13 – 24 are translated from the Greek old covenant writing (Septuagint) by Maura K. Hill.
The various resources and reference materials are listed at https://www.truebiblestudy.com/bible-materials.
In the TBS Word Translation and Study:
o Words in parentheses and italicized within a scripture verse are words inserted to help our English understanding of those words which are translated from Greek words.
o Additional explanatory insertions within a scripture verse are enclosed in square brackets and italicized.
o Non-English words are printed with English letters.
o I use an initial capital letter for all occurrences of the words Lord
and Master
when referring to either God or the Lord Jesus Christ due to my respect for them, therefore the reader will need to carefully consider the context of each particular usage to understand to whom that usage refers.
o Where the word spirit
refers to God, I use an initial capital or upper-case S
- Spirit. But when the word spirit
refers to the gift of holy spirit, etc, I use a small or lower-case s
- spirit.
o Underlined text is used for the English word but
when translated from the Greek word alla to show that it implies a strong contrast to that-which has just previously been stated, and/or to strengthen a command.
o Underlined text is used for the singular form of the word you
to distinguish it from the plural form of the word you
which is not underlined.
o Underlined text is also used for emphasis.
o In order to communicate the fullness of the emphasis when the Greek definite article is repeated both with the noun and its adjective - for example: I Corinthians 15:4 the Greek is te hemera te trite, which literally means the day the third
- I translate it as "the day, the third (day)."
o Verbs in the imperfect
tense are translated with the words used-to
and then the meaning of the verb.
o For example: used-to teach
indicates that the one teaching spent time teaching, his action of teaching continued during a past time that is now finished for some reason, not that it was a quick one-time occurrence. The one teaching taught others taking time to teach, and he may have repeated his teaching at different times and in different ways. This tense is also used to historically describe past events relating what happened.
o Verbs in the perfect
tense are translated from Greek with a superscript number 2 immediately following the verb - for example: it was written².
o This tense indicates an action done during a past time and which has a present continuing result, meaning it is still the same at the time the verb was spoken/written. Therefore, this example could be translated as: it was written and continues written.
o The noun love¹
or the verb to love¹
comes from the Greek word agape which is God’s kind of love.
When the Biblical writers wrote, there were no punctuation marks, no chapter or verse divisions indicated, etc, as we see them today in many of our English Bible translations and versions. Therefore we must read the whole context of each particular passage of Scripture for thought-content to more clearly understand the truth of what has been written.
Also, the original language was not English, and therefore when I may write that the writer said or wrote such and such, please understand that the writer actually spoke and wrote in the original language the equivalent to that-which I state in the English language to the best of my knowledge.

Introduction to Joshua and Israel’s Inheritance
The Book of Joshua chapters 13 – 24 records details about how Joshua gave the land to the tribes of Israel to inherit according to their lot.
The completion, when all of God’s people will rest in the fullness of the land promised by God, will occur as recorded in Revelation chapters 21 and 22.
Joshua was a son of Nun, who was a descendant of Ephraim, who was a son of Joseph, who was a son of Jacob (Israel). He believed regarding the Christ, who was first promised by God in Genesis 3:15.
The Lord God continued to help His people via Joshua in accordance with the good-message regarding the Christ.
The genealogy of the Christ includes Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, Phares, Esrom, Aram, Aminadab, Naasson (refer to Exodus 6:23), and his son Salmon who begat Boes (or Boaz) with Rahab (refer to Joshua 6:25; Matthew 1:5).

Inheritance: Reuben, Gad, Manasseh - Joshua 13
East of the Jordan
The Book of Joshua chapters 1 – 12 records the conquest of the land of Canaan by Joshua and the descendants of Israel; chapters 13 – 24 include details about how Joshua gave the land to the tribes of Israel to inherit according to their lot. The completion, when all of God’s people will rest in the fullness of the land promised by God, will occur as recorded in Revelation chapters 21 and 22.
The name Joshua
is a transliteration of the Hebrew word Jehoshua (Yehoshua) which is a combination of two words: God saves / Jehovah (Yahweh) the Savior. In Greek it is spelled Iesous which is the same Greek name that is also translated as Jesus
– but in this context it is clearly referring to the Joshua/Jesus who lived while Moses and the descendants of Israel were journeying towards the promised land. This Joshua carried-out God’s will to make it available for these people to be saved (made safe).
Joshua received spirit-life from God within him conditionally which gave him the ability to receive God’s Word directly from God Himself. God gave spirit to him upon the condition of believing what God told him and then living accordingly, similar to the holy spirit that many of God’s people received from Him for specific periods of time throughout the ages, such as Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses. Refer to Numbers 27:18 and Deuteronomy 34:9.
Joshua 13:1-7:
¹³:¹And Joshua (was) an elder having advanced² of days and (the) Lord said towards Joshua, "You advanced² of days and the much earth was left-behind² for an inheritance, .2even this (is) the earth, the (earth) having been left-down²:
boundaries of Philistines, the Gesouri and the Canaanite; .3from the un-dwelled (earth), the (un-dwelled earth) according to (the) face of Egypt, until the boundaries of Ekron;
out-from (the) left-sides of the Canaanites calculate-towards the five satrapies of the Philistines – the Gazaios and the Azorios and the Askalonite and the Gethaios and the Ekronite and the Evaios,
.4from Thaiman and all (the) earth of Canaan before Gaza and the Sidonians until Aphek, until the boundaries of the Amorraios, .5and all the earth of Gabli of Philistines and all Lebanon from (the) risings of (the) sun from Galgal under the mountain, the (mountain) of Hermon, until the entrance-way of Hamath,
.6every-person dwelling-down the mountain-area from Lebanon until the Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians I will wholly-destroy them from (the) face of Israel,
but you must throughly-give it in a lot of Israel which manner I commanded you; .7even now you must distribute this earth in an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh, from the Jordan until the sea, the great (sea), according to (the) sinkings of (the) sun, you must give it – the sea, the great (sea), will mark-out-definitely.
When Joshua became an elder (elderly; in this context literally referring to the fact that he was older in age than other people) since he was already advanced pertaining to his days (he had gone before, ahead or in-front of the usual time for a human-being to live – he was old; it was 6 years after he began to gain the victory over the land on the west side of the Jordan river, which was 7 years after the death of Moses)…
o the Lord said (the Master laid out a collection of words in a sentence to communicate something giving the substance or content [in the Hebrew text the word for Lord
is Jehovah (Yahweh) which refers to God in His covenant-relationship to that-which He created])
o towards Joshua,
o "Emphatically you advanced of days (in Greek there is a definite word for ‘you’ plus the verb meaning ‘you advanced²’ giving emphasis – you have already advanced pertaining to the days of your life)
o and the much earth (a lot of the land, ground) was left-behind and continues left-behind (left remaining behind as being under cover or concealment)
o for an inheritance (with a view to it being an assigned-lot, the heir’s portion),
o emphatically to the degree and in explanation that this is the earth (land, ground),
o emphatically and specifically the earth that has been left-down and continues left-down (the land remaining behind that has not yet been given to of the descendants of Israel):
…boundaries of (the borders of the territory pertaining to) Philistines (or Phulistiim, Phylistiim, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea), which includes the Gesouri (or Geshurite, Gesiri; in this context referring to the people located south of Gaza towards Egypt) and the Canaanite (the descendants of the man Canaan living in the land known as Canaan; referring to the people in the southern areas of the Negeb towards Kadesh Barnea [the Hebrew text omits ‘and the Canaanite’])…
o away from the un-dwelled earth (uninhabited area of the land), emphatically and specifically the un-dwelled earth according to the face of Egypt (in accordance to/with the front of Egypt; referring to the east side of it, as in its presence, before its eyes [the Hebrew text has ‘Sihor’ instead of ‘un-dwelled’], located southwest of Canaan),
o continuing up to the boundaries of Ekron (northwards to the borders of Ekron, or Akkaron);
…out from the left-sides (at the left-hand side) of the Canaanites calculate (reckon, compute, count) towards the 5 satrapies (provinces or principalities governed by a satrap, protector) pertaining to the Philistines – which are the Gazaios (or Gazite) and the Azorios (or Azorite, Azotus [the Hebrew text has ‘Ashdodite’ instead of ‘Azorios’]) and the Askalonite (or Eshkalonite) and the Gethaios (or Gethite, Gathite, Gittite) and the Ekronite (or Akkaronite) and the Evaios (or Evite, Hivite)…
o out from Thaiman (or Thaeman, Teman; referring to the land inhabited by the descendants of Esau, southeast of Canaan)
o and all the earth (every part of the land) of Canaan before Gaza (in-front-of, opposite-to, facing Gaza, or Gazah, which is by the coast of the Mediterranean Sea [the Hebrew text omits this phrase])
o and the Sidonians (or Sidonaios; referring to the people dwelling in the northwest corner of Canaan which became a district in Phoenicia, part of Syria, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea [the Hebrew text includes ‘Mearah’ referring to the area of caves near Sidon])
o continuing up to Aphek (located in northern Canaan), specifically continuing up to the boundaries of the Amorraios (the borders of the Amorraios, or Amorites, located northeast of Canaan),
o and all the earth of Gabli (or Giblite, Gebalite, Galiath) pertaining to the Philistines and all Lebanon (in the north of Canaan)
o from the risings of the sun (the eastern parts of the land where the sun rises in the mornings)
o from Galgal [the Hebrew text has ‘Baalgad’ instead of ‘Galgal’] under the mountain, emphatically and specifically the mountain of Hermon (referring to the foot of Mount Hermon or Aermon, which is northeast of the Jordan river in northern Canaan),
o continuing up to the entrance-way of Hamath (the direct path/road of access to Hamath or Emath, located in the north by the mountain range of Lebanon),
…every-person dwelling-down the mountain-area (all, everyone who is inhabiting the hill area) away from Lebanon continuing up to Misrephoth-maim (or Maserethothmaim, Maseron, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea south of Sidon)…
o all the Sidonians
o emphatically I will wholly-destroy them (in Greek there is a definite word for ‘I’ plus the verb meaning ‘I will wholly-destroy’ giving emphasis – I Myself will utterly ruin and slay them, cause them complete disaster with death, cut them off)
o away from the face of Israel (their presence or vicinity),
…but emphatically it is imperative that you throughly-give it in a lot of Israel (thoroughly give this land within the cause and sphere of action of it being an allotment, assigned portion, assigned to the descendants of Israel by lot, allotted to all of you as your inheritance) in the manner (method, mode) that I commanded you (caused the state of being charged, enjoined to/for you, Joshua)…
o even now (emphatically to the degree and in explanation that at the present time)
o it is imperative that you distribute this earth (you, Joshua, are in the state of dividing, imparting, apportioning this land, ground)
o in an inheritance (within the cause and sphere of action of this land being the assigned-lot, the heir’s portion)
o to/for the 9 tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh (the clan or family group pertaining to him; the descendants of Manasseh or Manasse, who was a son of Joseph, who was a son of Jacob/Israel),
o away from the Jordan river
o continuing up to the sea, emphatically and specifically the great sea (the large sea of the Mediterranean), in accordance with the sinkings of the sun (the direction where the sun sets or goes-down at the west side, the areas westward, along the west coast),
o it is imperative that you give it (this land) –
o the sea, emphatically and specifically the great (large) sea, will definitely mark out (it will separate the coast of the land as the boundary, the limited-area, the horizon)."
Some Greek and Hebrew texts omit words in verse 7 above.
Joshua had already taken the land described in these verses – and the time had come for him to give it for an inheritance to the descendants of Israel.
The Lord God
In the Greek language, the word translated God
is the singular noun Theos, which refers to the only true God
