in daily life, which includes being organized and structured—at work (tidy desk policies), and at home (everything has its place
). Cleanliness is next to godliness, right? Well, not always. The problem is that in our pursuit of tidy perfection we have forgotten the true essence of a good mess, and how the disorganized, unprecedented, and unexpected things in life can lead to something beautiful.
In 1975 a sell-out Keith Jarrett jazz concert at The Opera House in Cologne almost didn’t go ahead. Jarrett was a renowned jazz piano player, but the piano on stage was simply unplayable. The bass notes were muffled, the instrument was too small to be heard in the auditorium, and the high notes were out of tune. Taking pity on the teenage event organizer, Vera Brandes, Jarrett went ahead and did what he could with the instrument. The challenge of the unplayable piano forced him to digress from his usual style, which later led to 3.5 million sales of the concert album (The Köln Concert
