There is overwhelming pressure to be more adult in daily life, which includes being organized and structured—at work (tidy desk policies), and at home (everything has its place). Cleanliness is next to godliness, right? Well, not always. In 1975 a sell-out Keith Jarrett jazz concert at The Opera House in Cologne almost didn’t go ahead. Jarrett was a renowned jazz piano player, but the piano on stage was simply unplayable. The bass notes were muffled, the instrument was too small to be heard in the auditorium, and the high notes were out of tune. Taking pity on the teenage event organizer, Vera Brandes, Jarrett went ahead and did what he could with the instrument.
