Foreword
Life is interesting especially in the world of writing. This is because writing in many cases is through inspiration. After having written the following books: Happy Though Married (2003), The Tie that Binds (2005). What Happy Couples Know (2006b) and Milestones of Life (2007a) I felt I had written enough on the areas of the family. [No wonder my relative Lillian Karimi Mathenge asked me one time if I was not planning to write another book on the areas on family, I told her that I was not intending to]. However, one day as I was traveling from Nairobi to Meru in a Matatu
the idea to write The Winning Family
was born. People in that Matatu
were extremely quiet. In that meditative mood the idea to write this book like an inspiration
from above suddenly struck. How strange!
The game of life is challenging. Many times it is full of intrigues. Other times it is dramatic. Everybody in this world yearns for success. Even those who seem to have failed are also yearning for success. During these turbulent times to be a winner sometimes seems elusive. Any game has to have rules. A ‘success game’ has rules too.
The book The Winning Family expounds time tested methods on how to become a winner. A family is composed of individuals. If individuals become successful, the family in turn will become a winner. Successful individuals in a family can parachute a business enterprise to success if given a chance. What is being postulated in this book are not man’s guesses and opinions. They are proven approaches to life’s situations and they work.
Now that you are reading The Winning Family
is a sign that you are interested in being a winner in this game of life. You want to fulfill your dreams. Many people in their endeavour to be winners in this life forget there are tools that can help them get there.
It is important for you to know that this is not a book about coping with the family or fitting yourself in to make a tame and a comfortable marriage. The book is about how to turn the situations into a fire of honesty which will burn away your hangs-ups, your limitations and leave you freer and more fulfilled than you currently might think possible. It will also help you break free from the modern madness of hurry – earn- and – spend and get a life.
This book will liberate you. This is because it will take away confusion by providing a map and tools for the journey. Life becomes very challenging especially if you have a family. When you are a parent especially of young children, your fondest hope is getting half an hour’s break and having a good lie down. A wild fantasy would be reading a newspaper right through or getting to bed with energy to make love to the stranger
that is your partner. Before you know it, you’ve got adolescent children and all the mental anguish they bring. If you’re not careful, life can be what happens to you while you’re too busy to make other plans.
Family life is tough and we get very little help from the society. There is no tradition in most societies for making marriage work, only for making it endure, which is not the same thing.
Because of the poor quality teaching that we get in human relationships, many people find family life to be a dark episode in their lives. Don’t forget you’re given a marriage certificate without having gone through a course on marriage!
It is sad and a dark commentary that many people feel more successful and also feel as winners at their work place than at home. Instead of being a harbor and haven of comfort and security, a home can be the place of scare and despair.
You might have been feeling like a failure at family level. It is important to recognize how much you are actually succeeding. Don’t forget all the other benefits. To many marriage has become a disposable item to be thrown away if it doesn’t work. Work and family life need to be reviewed from time to time. The family is the root and work is the flower. If you don’t feed the roots, there won’t be many flowers. So the family is the cornerstone of a nation and all other organisation.
Life has natural priorities which cannot be bypassed. But this does not mean getting caught up in the pressure of an insane society – with its rush to earn and spend. But we should also realize that time is a precious commodity in life and you should invest in it wisely. Time is the central issue of modern life, but this should be replaced by love and people.
If you are married, the best thing you can do to strengthen your family is to build your marriage relationship. Its certainly the best thing you can do for your spouse, but it also has an incredibly positive impact on your children. The greatest thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother. The greatest thing a mother can do for the children is to love their father.
A most missing ingredient in many marriages is dedication to make things work. Marriages may start because of love but they finish because of commitment. Individuals who have a determination to make the marriage persist, force themselves to adjust and to accept situations which would seem sufficient grounds for breakup. If you want to help your spouse, your children and yourself, then become committed to building and sustaining a strong marriage. There is definitely a correlation between family success and personal success. Not only does building a strong family lay the groundwork for future success, but it also gives life deeper meaning.
Few people have ever been genuinely successful without a positive supportive family. For most people, a good family helps you know your purpose and to develop your potential, and it also helps you enjoy the journey along the way with an intensity that isn’t possible otherwise. If you have been travelling the road on the success journey and you have neglected to carry your family along, it’s time you have to make a U-turn. Don’t forget to pick up the people who are significant in your life. There will be great joy if you do.
I am sure that this book The Winning Family will be a turning point in your life. It
