The DASH Diet for Beginners - David Ortner
1. What is the Dash Diet?
On January 3, 2014, US News & World Report selected the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet as the best diet of the year. 2014 was the fourth year in a row the DASH diet earned such an honor.
Why has the DASH diet been ranked as (1) the best diet, (2) the healthiest diet, and (3) the best diet for diabetes, for 4 years in a row? According to the expert panel of physicians assembled by US New & World Reports, it’s because the DASH diet has been shown to improve health by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, and kidney stones. And while the DASH diet is not per se a weight-loss program, participants may indeed lose unwanted pounds because the plan helps guide them toward healthier and more filling meals and snacks.
The DASH diet is easy to follow, since it provides for a balance of delicious healthy foods, and, more importantly, it really works. Indeed, USA Today reported that the DASH diet has been proven to lower blood pressure as well as medications in as little as 14 days. And in November 2013, the American Heart Association recommended the DASH diet as a means for preventing heart disease and stroke.
The DASH diet is a long-term approach to healthy eating that's designed to help treat or prevent high blood pressure (hypertension). The plan encourages participants to reduce the sodium (salt) in their diets and to eat foods that are rich in nutrients that help lower blood pressure, like potassium, calcium and magnesium. Those who faithfully follow DASH diet guidelines may be able to reduce their blood pressure by a few points in just two weeks.
