Lightning struck so close I felt the boom pound into my chest. It was so bright I couldn't see for a moment. Was it safe to get out of the car? It was only a short dash from my parking spot to the front door. The doorman was nowhere to be seen, but it wasn't raining yet.

It sucks being me, I said, gritting my teeth. And this is the perfect way to end a perfectly fucked up date night.

I was wearing my new suit. It wasn't cheap, either. Last thing I needed was for it to get soaked in the rain, so I sucked up my fear of lightning and opened the car door. The first tiny drops of rain started at the same time.

Figures.

I slammed the car door and took off running. The sky opened up about halfway to the front door. Yeah, I was soaked within seconds. Pissed me off so much. First my blind date rips me for being lame, and then ditches me to run off with some other dude, and now this.

The front door was locked. I wanted to scream. Of course, it was always locked after dark, but still. Jerry, the doorman, was nowhere to be seen in the lobby. So I pressed the ringer button on the intercom.

Hello, may I help you? Jerry's voice came out all tinny.

It's Randy Jones, Jerry, I said. Let me in. It's raining like a mofo out here.

Be right there, Randy, he said.

I growled. He could click the lock open from anywhere in the building. I knew it. He knew it. Why make me wait in the rain? I was already chilled to the bone, and god only knew if my new suit was ruined. It was dry clean only. Wasn't sure what that mean, but I was afraid it meant water made it shrink.
