Chapter 1

Night Class

Craig sat on the side of his bed, thinking about the night class he was about to attend. He had been taking the course for the past month, and at first, had some apprehension about returning to college at his age. It had been fifteen years since Craig graduated from college and had never thought about returning. For some reason, he felt a bit more nervous tonight, partly because he took an exam the week before and would get back the results, but he also had mixed feelings about the professor, who seemed to treat him as though he was inferior to her. Craig thought perhaps he was being a bit paranoid, but everything the professor said to him, she seemed to say in a derogatory manner.

The class he was taking was an introduction to Biology and taught from 6pm to 9pm. Taking a three hour night class at first didn’t seem like such a bad idea, but he did find sitting there listening to boring lectures for that long was not always easy. There was more than one occasion during the past month when Craig felt like quitting the class but decided he had gone this far, he might as well continue.

After showering and changing into a pair of jeans and a nice-looking shirt, Craig headed to the college. He always liked to arrive at class before the other students got there, it gave him time to review material from the previous week, as well as read up on what was going to be lectured upon that night. Another reason he liked to be there slightly early was that being forty, he was a bit older than everyone else, and it was a slight relief to arrive before the other students showed up. It also gave him some extra time to relax and get his mind ready for the next three hours of learning.

As Craig made his way through the college campus and stopped at his classroom, he took a deep breath before walking through the door and sitting down at his regular seat in the middle of the front row. By sitting up close, he felt that that was the best place to be to get the most out of his college experience.

Although the exam the previous week didn’t seem overly difficult for him, it had taken him quite a bit longer than he anticipated. Years ago, when he had previously been to college, he was always the first or second person to finish a test, but he did try to take as much time with this exam as he could- partly to make sure every question was answered as best it could be, but also, he was a little anxious taking the exam with other students who were nearly half his age.
