Chapter 1

Friday Night Surprise

It was four o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, and Craig was finishing some last-minute paperwork he needed to complete before the weekend. After taking over as CEO of the hospital where he had been a Cardio-Thoracic surgeon since concluding his residency and then fellowship, he not only elevated the reputation of the hospital to become one of the very best in the country, he also consistently maintained a surplus revenue every year- which was necessary to keep the hospital from being in the red to staying in the black.

Craig sipped at his cup of coffee, which he enjoyed with a little bit of sugar and some cream, as he closed-down his computer until Monday. There was a knock on the door, then his administrative assistant, Tiffany, walked in. The two of them had known one another since their college days, and it was due to Craig tutoring her that she was able to finish her bachelor’s degree. Tiffany had anxiety issues that started manifesting itself once she entered college, and suffered from a social phobia called Enochlophobia, which caused her to have a fear of being in crowds. She was all right around a group of five or so people, but much more than that would cause her so much anxiety she would have to leave. Her grades began to slip while in college, as Tiffany started having trouble going to her classes. In her junior year, when her grades began to drop dramatically due to her phobia, she asked Craig to help tutor her. Craig’s way of tutoring, however, was very unorthodox, but her grades increased enough for her to remain in college and finally graduate.

Although the two of them never officially dated, they always remained very close- in many ways. After Craig finished his residency, he immediately hired her as his secretary in his office. As he quickly worked his way up to being the Medical Director of the hospital, to Vice-President, then Finally CEO, he took her along as his administrative assistant each step of the way. Tiffany was even the one who introduced him to his wife while she was in the spring semester of her Freshman year.

I’m going home now, Craig, Tiffany said as she walked up to his large desk, which had numerous papers stacked all over it. In a frame on his desk was a picture of his beautiful wife, and next to that was a picture of Tiffany. He never thought it odd to have photos of two different women sitting there. His wife was his lover and best friend, while Tiffany was almost as close a best friend, and about the only other person he could confide anything in. Craig always liked it when people called him by his first name, instead of Doctor. He didn’t feel hearing the title was necessary to know what he did for a living.
