About this ebook

Camping does not have to mean meals of nothing but hot dogs and smores over and over unless that is what you really want. There are plenty of things that the smart and prepared camper can make- even if they only have a stick and a fire. This book will show you how to take the most primitive tools and make delicious meals but will also show you other methods of camp cooking that will be so delicious that you will recreate them in your own backyard. With only a few extra tools and steps you can make everything from breakfast to dessert, main dishes and side dishes right there at your campsite. You will learn:

Direct and indirect cooking methods

Foil packets, foil wrapping and more

How a dutch oven is worth the extra weight to even a remote camp site

How to make the most of even the smallest grills.

You will find tips, tricks and step by step recipes here perfect for the reluctant or first time camper as well as the experienced “survivor man” camper. Being away from home should not mean having to deal with less than wonderful food.

    Camping Recipes - Megan Beck

    Foreword

Camping is Nature's way of promoting the motel business. - Dave Barry

I would probably be among the very first to admit that I really am not a camping fan. It's not that I don't enjoy being outdoors- that's untrue. Give me a hammock and I will sleep all day. I spend hours upon hours in my swimming pool. I would rather do yard work than housework, but there is something about the whole camping experience that just does not fill my heart with joy. My family loves it so off I go to spend time with the people that I love.

Like many people who are trying to make the best of a situation I find one aspect and make it my own. For me, it is the cooking. I love to cook, and camp cooking is no exception. Sure, the kids like to roast a hot dog on a stick while they are waiting for a meal to be done and that is fine but what I do is far more than impaling wieners. I have made full meals that have made people gasp. I have had people from neighboring campsites wander over to ask questions and to beg a sample (or a full meal). It's not really that hard, I promise. Delicious food never has to be some major struggle no matter where you are making it.

Let's start making delicious camp food, shall we?

Cooking at Camp: What Should You Bring?

There are several levels of camp cooking. There is primitive where you only have the most rudimentary of tools (sticks and fire, mostly). There is direct cooking where you wrap food in foil and toss it into the fire and then fish it out when it is done. You can bring in a grate and cook over a fire or use a grill. You can set a dutch oven in or over the top of the fire. Regardless of the type that you are going with make sure that you have everything that you need at the ready. Obviously, you will need the food you are cooking, so I will not list that but for primitive cooking you will
