    CHAPTER 1: THE TALE OF A NIGHT OWL TURNED EARLY MORNING EXERCISER (EME)

    I am not a natural morning lark. I’m not the kind of person whose eyes pop open in the morning as soon as the sun peeks over the horizon. I do not greet the day with a smile, nor do I bask in the glow of the rising sun, nor do I jump out of bed with the enthusiasm of a small puppy.

    To use a modern colloquialism, I am a night owl. No matter what time I actually get out of bed in the morning, I don’t really hit my stride until somewhere around noon. I tend to peak in the late afternoon, and I’m typically still going strong long after dinner. It’s a rare night for me to fall asleep before midnight, with 2 o’clock in the morning being a more typical bedtime for me.

    My natural inclination to stay up late and sleep in late began when I was around the age of nine. I was a bookworm who loved to read, and I can remember reading in my bed with the blankets pulled up over my head and a flashlight in my hand. I had to hide in my bed because it was usually quite late and my mother would have insisted I turn off the lights and stop reading if she had known I was awake.

    By the time I was out of my elementary school years, my mother had given up on the struggle to impose a reasonable bedtime on me. Instead, I would stay up (with my bedside lamp for illumination) and read far into the night. I was often dragging my way out the door to make it to school on time (I admit to being
