    CHAPTER ONE

    ~ Tom~

    ––––––––

In the morning, I awoke to a shriek coming from the bedroom. It took me a couple of minutes to get my wits about myself and remember that I had laid Jacy in there to sleep the night before, while I slept on the couch.

As I wiped the cobwebs from my eyes, I jumped when I felt something move along my arm. Damn cat must have curled up beside me in my sleep. Good morning Willow, I managed to say through clenched teeth before going to check on her master.

As I rounded the corner to the bedroom I thought about what I would say to Jacy. She’d never seen me in panther form before. I had no idea how to start the conversation, so I hoped she’d lead in.

I knocked lightly on the door. Hello, she said in a faint voice. Who’s there?

I could tell she was scared and had no idea where she was. It’s me, I said as gently as possible.

Me who? Her voice was getting more annoyed now. She was getting upset and her temper was starting to flare.

Me, Tom, I said, trying to sound reassuring. I opened the door and put my hands up jokingly. A pillow flew across the room and hit me in the face with a thud. I stood there stunned as I stared at her holding a vase in her hand ready to hurl it at me next.

Jacy, I come in peace. Calm the hell down.

Why am I here? she asked accusingly as Willow rounded the corner. And why do you have my cat, you...you...you cat burglar.

She obviously didn’t remember any of the events from the night before, which would make my explanation much easier.

Jacy, just put the vase down and we’ll talk.

You start talking. I’m not putting the vase down.

Last night after you threw my shoes at me on your step, you fell and hit your head. I brought you here to recover.

Why didn’t you take me inside my own house to recover there?

You’d already kicked me out of there, remember? I knew you shouldn’t stay alone, and I figured the best way to make sure you were safe was to bring you here.

And Willow? she asked, still holding the vase above her head.

Willow came back just as I was about to put you in my car and bring you here. I thought you’d be happy to have her with you, so I brought her along too. I figured that way you’d know she was back as soon as you woke up.

She nodded her head and lowered the vase as she pondered over everything I said. Slowly she sat the vase down on the nearby dresser and leaned down to pet Willow, who kept brushing up against her legs.

Well, thank you, Tom. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Can you take us home now?
