Cat on the Prowl - Sandy Sullivan

Chapter One

The growl of a mountain lion echoed through the inky blackness surrounding Suzanne, warning her she needed to get somewhere safe for the night. Out in the open wasn't protected, not from the predators or the man hunting her. Tree branches blocked her path. She stumbled over a particularly big one on the ground. The gnarled branches stuck out like hands ready to grab her should she wander too close. She rubbed the chill from her arms as she glanced back over her shoulder. Nothing moved. Stillness surrounded her as she looked back in front of her.

The glimmer of a light in the distance played peek-a-boo through the thick foliage.

Let's hope there’s a friendly old couple ahead that will take me in for the night. I can't stay out here. There is something lurking in the darkness of the forest, something menacing.

Night air ruffled the hair at her neck, lifting the wispy tendrils then laying them down. Shivers rolled down her back, and she rubbed her arms again to calm the chills the cooler air of the evening brought on the wind.

Her gaze shifted back and forth as leaves rustled overhead. Shadows moved. Night creature sounds echoed around her as she kept walking toward the flickering light.

Go towards the light. Go towards the light, she said, giggling at the stupidity of her words.

The smell of damp earth swirled around her. The crunch of dry leaves under her boots sounded loud to her. She hoped no one was near enough to hear.

Another growl from the mountain lion and a howl of a wolf bounced off the trees making her walk just a little faster.

When she pushed through the last bit of underbrush to reach the clearing, a rustic structure came into view. The cabin could have been something out of a Thomas Kincaid portrait with its wraparound porch, inviting windows glowing with lamplight, and the smoke curling from the chimney overhead. A horse nickered from the small corral off to the side of the house. She hurried to the fencing to stroke the animal's nose. Ssh, she whispered. Everything will be fine, pretty thing.

Another loud growl from the mountain lion sounded much closer. She jumped in fear even though the horse was strangely calm with the predator so close.

How did I get into this situation anyway? Oh yeah, Mitchell brought me out here to fuck me, then kill me. I need to get inside. I hope your owner doesn't mind.

The wood groaned under her weight when she stepped up onto the porch, heading for the door. A couple of knocks yielded no answer. Hoping beyond hope that the door was unlocked, she turned the knob easily under her hand. As she pushed open the door, she called, Anyone home?

Silence met her ears.

Mmm…well, I guess I'll have to wait and hope I'm not intruding too much, she said, closing the door behind her. Wow, this fireplace is huge. The massive stone structure encompassed almost the whole wall. Rows upon rows of river rock formed the front and a large mantel spanned the center. Rustic décor filled the room. Oversized heavy furniture with oak side tables made the room cozy, and even a saddle sat in the corner on a stand.

Obviously, the guy actually rides the horse in the corral outside.

The scent of leather met her nose bringing out a sense of belonging. She loved that smell.

Several picture frames sat on top of the mantel.
