I read the address on the A3 envelope "Sarah Phillips, 323 Greenleaf Grove, Palmerston North, New Zealand. I almost shook with excitement, knowing what it was. The envelope’s contents slid out into my hands after I used a kitchen knife to open it. The New Zealand National Certificate in Real Estate sales. Hereby awarded to Sarah Phillips." I looked at the piece of paper I had worked hard for a year to achieve. I was so glad that I had finally got it. No more factory work for me. I can wear business suits, earn above minimum wage and finally buy my own place to live. No more flatmates for me. I had already found a new job with a local real estate agency, and I was to start next week. I couldn’t wait. I was also extremely nervous. What if after all this I just couldn’t hack it?

I tried not to dwell on how good or bad I was going to be at my new job. It was part of my plan to improve myself. That included eliminating negative thoughts and focusing on the positives. I didn’t know how long it would last, but a girl’s got to try. One positive was the fact that I had finally gotten my qualification. My life was finally improving and substantially at that and at 32 years old it was about time.

I held the certificate underneath my face and took a photo with my phone camera. Well, I took about 12 photos until I got a good one. I flicked through, seeing my thick frame, straight nose set in an oval face, cloudy blue eyes, olive skin and honey blonde hair in each photo. I was often told it was a stunning combination, but I could never see the beauty in myself. I uploaded the best shot to Facebook. Woohoo it finally arrived. Within a couple of minutes, I had several likes and congratulations including from my best friend Dawn who moved away six months ago to be a big shot designer in Paris. She was doing so well and was enjoying life with her partner James who was a little hottie. I was a bit jealous of her success which seemed like it came so quickly to her. Still, I was doing well in my own way. Now, what was I going to do to fill in the time I usually reserved for studying?

Later that evening I went to my favourite bar The Local to celebrate with my flatmate Tessa, a blonde like me, except she was skinny and very tall, also a funeral director of all things. I decided it was as good a time as any to dress up a bit so I wore my black velvet dress with long sleeves that only just went past my bottom. This one never failed to get me laid. It also emphasised my ahh colossal assets. Well, I am an e cup so why not flaunt it right?

Tessa and I were playing a round of pool. She was winning like usual when Luna the pixie-like bartender came up to us with my order of cheesy fries. Hi girls how’s it going tonight?

Great thank you, Luna, I replied enthusiastically. Guess what I got today.

The certificate arrived? Sweet, congratulations. She reached over and gave me a little hug before asking if we needed anything else.

Oh, by the way, those guys over by the garden area there have been talking about asking you for a round of pool. They are kind of cute. I smoothed my curly hair back making sure I looked my best.
