Chapter 1
There was nothing Madison and Sunita loved more than a field trip. Not March break, not summer vacation, not even Halloween. Well, maybe Halloween... but field trips were a close second!
All month, they’d been counting the days until the Grade Four class trip to County Conservation Area. Just imagine: a full morning of hiking the trails, trying out bird calls, and looking for animal tracks. In the afternoon, the whole class would play everybody’s favourite game: Predator and Prey. They would all pretend to be different forest animals. The predators would chase the prey through the woods. It was going to be so much fun.
On top of that, the class would get to visit a real pioneer graveyard!
When the day finally came, Madison’s mom packed her a pineapple and turkey sandwich with mint mustard, pickled beets on the side, and lots of sunblock. The sunblock wasn’t to eat, of course—not unless Madison got really hungry.
Sunita’s grandfather put together enough snacks to give her energy for a week and enough water to fill the class aquarium. Her backpack was so heavy it dragged halfway to her knees.
On the bus, Madison and Sunita snacked on masala boondi to lighten the load. They also traded shoelaces, because that’s what best friends do.

Madison said as the school bus continued down the highway. We never play it at school.
Stuffing her mouth with masala boondi, Sunita said, That’s because we need a forest for Predator and Prey. We can’t just play on the soccer field.
Madison laughed. All the prey animals would have to hide behind the goal posts.
"You know what I really can’t wait for? Sunita asked as she pulled out her map of County Conservation Area. She pointed to the spot marked with a cross.
The pioneer graveyard! I can’t believe actual pioneers were buried there. Do you think we’ll see any pioneer ghosts?"
Madison shivered, pulling her spring jacket tighter. I sure hope not. Anyway, ghosts don’t come out during the daytime.
Sure they do!
Sunita said, taking off her baseball cap to redo her ponytail. "My grandfather’s seen a
