Her gaze returned to Ethan as she took in his cutoff jeans encasing his tanned muscled legs, and his bare chest sprinkled with a smattering of hair started her heart tripping in her chest. The sight of him still caused a stirring effect to race through Mandy and she wondered if it was only a physical reaction. His dark, almost black eyes, held a questioning look as he continued to make eye contact with her. He raised his hand and pushed his long black hair away from his face revealing his chiseled profile.
“Is something bothering you, Mandy?” he placed a basket of plants he’d gathered from the forest onto the table. “You’ve seemed a little preoccupied. Aren’t you feeling well?”
“Just a little tired lately,” she murmured, as she walked to the stove and checked on the bubbling stew she planned for their meal.
So, he’s finally noticing my unrest. She silently wondered when he’d wake up and see how unhappy she was in their daily routine. Mandy thought she still loved Ethan, but little doubts kept hammering in her head. Maybe it was the isolation causing her to think this way and the idea she was missing something in life. He’d been her only lover and she was looking for more satisfaction in the bedroom, needing to experience what it felt like to have another man in her life, if even for a short time. These strange thoughts began to fill her mind a few months earlier and refused to go away no matter how hard she tried to dismiss them. At first, she felt shocked to be thinking of other men, but now the visual scenes entering her head were an everyday occurrence.
Maybe knowing they were going to have an associate from the college back home arrive for a short visit brought the strange fantasies to her mind. When Ethan mentioned the fact to her, he said someone would arrive within the next month or so, although he hadn’t given her an exact date.

As Mandy Calahan looked through the window at the lush tropical greenery outside their hut, she felt the sweat trickling down her back between her shoulder blades. Her reflection bounced back at her from the shiny window revealing her shoulder length brunette hair needing a wash, and her emerald green eyes holding a look of dissatisfaction. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get used to the muggy heat of the thick jungle located near the rain forest and the Amazon River. At the age of twenty-five she was beginning to feel as if life was passing her by.

Her gaze traveled to her vegetable garden, colorful and vibrant in the baking sun. When she and Ethan arrived in the remote forest for an extended stay, Mandy planted a garden, loving to watch things grow and knowing her efforts were worthwhile. Their main staples of meat were flown in at regular intervals and placed in a freezer for future use.

How could it be nearly the Christmas season? The heat made it appear as if it was midsummer, and not the snowy winter season the states enjoyed before the celebration of Christmas. She thought it might be nice to decorate a tree, but who was there to enjoy it with her and Ethan. There was no way she could invite the sparsely populated natives to celebrate with them.

Even if she wanted to, they lived quite a distance from her and Ethan in a little village bordering the swift flowing Amazon.

Since arriving with her husband, Ethan, Mandy considered the new location home. Ethan, five years older than her, had a degree as a Botanist. They’d arrived almost a year ago, and at first the time passed swiftly, but now it seemed to drag slowly for her.

She hadn’t obtained a degree like her husband, but had taken courses in the work they’d undertaken to discover medicinal plants. Ethan’s main work consisted of finding plants in the rain forest in hopes of discovering a cure for cancer. After receiving a grant for his study, they’d set up a lab in the crude hut and she’d spent days along with Ethan in the forest, identifying vegetation that came to their attention as sources for medicine.
