About this ebook

Glancing at her image, all she could see was a white, sterile bandage covering one side of her face. The temptation was too much and she reached up, pulling the adhesive away from her cheek. Shock coursed through her and there wasn’t any doubt in her mind that her fiancé must have visited her–that he’d managed to peek beneath the bandage and see the damage the accident had caused.
A jagged red scar ran the length of her face. As she turned her head, the good side of her face appeared in her line of vision. Other than her cheekbones showing a little more prominence on the undamaged side, her flawless skin and perfectly shaped features were intact. Before the accident, she’d had her fair share of dates and men pursuing her. She doubted whether she’d get a second look from any male now.
She reached up and ran her hand through her tousled blonde hair. It certainly needed washing, but that would have to wait. Her oversized green eyes reflected in the glass, they held a look of sadness, which hadn’t been in them before. Her troubling thoughts returned to the opposite side of her face. She couldn’t stop the melancholy, as her eyes misted over the sight in the mirror. Kelly felt so miserable the tears flowed down her heated cheeks. She didn’t have any family except Derek, and now he’d deserted her when she needed him the most. She knew he’d left her, although she’d had no confirmation. What other explanation could there be? And who could blame him for leaving?

Kelly awoke one morning from a coma to the sound of soft music playing. She couldn’t remember what happened, or why she was in the hospital. After asking, the nurse told her she’d been involved in an accident three weeks ago. Slowly, the recollections of the last few weeks started filtering through her head.

Thinking about her life before the accident, she remembered she’d worked as a court stenographer. Now, she wondered if she could return to work for her employer after such a lengthy absence. She wasn’t sure how long it would take her to heal so she thought it might be easier for her to give her notice.

She visualized the horrifying accident in her mind, but what bothered her more was the bandage stretched across the left side of her face—it made her wonder how badly her face was damaged. She asked for a mirror when she awoke, but the nurses put her off telling her all she needed to do was concentrate on getting her strength back. A few days passed before Kelly felt alert enough to sit up in bed.

When a nurse made her way into the room later that morning, Kelly decided the time was right to ask a few more questions.

It was eating away at her to find out if she was permanently scarred since the bandage was hiding half her face. She also needed to find out about her personal life. Has my fiancé come to the hospital to visit me?

A strange expression danced across the woman’s face and she didn’t answer right away. An intuition told Kelly that something was wrong.

When she tried making eye contact with the nurse, the woman wouldn’t look at her. Now she knew they were hiding something from her.

I’m not certain. The nurse busied herself with the IV pole above Kelly’s head. I was assigned this floor a week ago.

An uncomfortable silence fell between them. Kelly could tell she no longer wanted to talk about anything personal, so she changed the subject. What’s my doctor’s name? Can I talk to him?
