    KINGDOM OF LONLINESS

    RAMCHARAN SUNDAR

The characters and the incidents portrayed in this book is the pure imagination of the author alone and it is not based on the true incidents.

    Prologue

I wrote this story in Tamil language in the year 2005, and then it was shelved as I was unaware of the publishing process and also to pursue my professional career. Nine years later I took the script notebook from the loft, removed the grimes and read it at my leisure time. I was amazed by the content and decided to publish. I published the novel in Tamil language in September, 2014. As per the suggestion of my non-Tamil friends, I have translated it in English with some changes.

The name of the protagonist in this story is Thirunaavukkarasu shortly called as Thiru, while reading this story reader's should read it from his point of view to realize his thoughts, experience and his way of life.

    August 20, 2006, 8:30 am

Green Ways Road, Egmore, Chennai (Capital City of Tamil Nadu, India)

It is a heavy rainy morning. Every rain drop felt like hammers in miniature.

‘An alert was sounded to the fishermen as cyclone is expected to cross the Bay of Bengal coast, according to local reports. This situation will last for a week, fishermen were warned against venturing out into the sea. That's all for today, Priya, signing off for News time, All India radio... Good day'

Sounded a radio from a tea shop near the main road.  An auto rickshaw driver opposite to tea stall was trying to start the engine by pulling the lever.

'Driver, please make it faster... my daughter has started to scream as she couldn't bear the labor pain' said an old lady around 50 years of age who occupied the rear passenger seat of that auto rickshaw.

'Lady, I am trying to start it, but my auto's engine is not igniting because of the rain... need more heat to ignite it '- Auto Driver.

After several attempts driver started the auto.

'Ma... its paining heavy ' said the pregnant woman in a brittle voice to the old lady.

'Try to bear the pain for some more minutes dear, the hospital is nearby' - Old lady.

The auto driver drove it towards the route where the government hospital is located.

'Ma...we have many problems already in our life... I really don't want this child to struggle with us' said the pregnant woman in wheezy tone.

‘Giving birth to a child is a good omen… just be positive... look... it is raining heavily in Chennai where there was not much of rain last year'.

While speaking to her he kept his eye focused on the road. Then he suddenly turned his head towards the pregnant lady and said

'If good things are happening to the world because of your child's birth... why not to your family?... so all your problems are going to vanish, don't worry'.

At the same moment a stranger was crossing the road when the auto driver turned his head back to the pregnant lady. Looking at this the old lady frantically shouted 'Driver, take care, a man is crossing the road' to alert him.

The auto driver applied the brake immediately. Though the brake was applied, the auto skidded on the slippery road and hit forcefully on the crossing stranger. Because of this impact the stranger thumped his head on to the nearby lamppost. Blood streamed out from the stranger's head and mixed with the stagnated rainwater on the road. Looking at this incident public crowded to the spot and started to beat the driver for his mistake.

The old lady inside the auto stepped down and implored to the public 'Please leave him, he has to take my daughter to the hospital, she is suffering from labor pain ' in a weepy tone.

‘Hey guys, leave him, let us take the injured man to the hospital' said an orotund voice from the public side. Some men from the public carried the injured person and rushed to the government hospital.

    Government hospital, seminar hall.

Dean Ranganathan was giving his speech to the group of students standing in front of him. 'Dear final year students of MBBS, I welcome you all to this seminar about the topic Treatments of patients during the severity. I am not going to take much of your time and I believe knowledge transfers occur in practical experience and not in theory, so I am taking you all to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) ward where the chances of death is more... a doctor's knowledge in medical science will not be enough to save a patient in ICU, he should use his psychological skills to talk to the patient and encourage him... that will increase his confidence and cure him... this is the sign of the perfect doctor.... ok guys, let's move to the ICU ward' - Dean Ranganathan.

Everybody went to the ICU ward.

Dean said 'Only two members are allowed to enter this ward, so you all can form a pair and visit each time when one pair comes out of this ward '.

He selected a pair from the student group and took them to the ICU ward.

There was a treatment going on for a patient in that ward.

Dean introduced the attending doctor to the students

    'He is Doctor Jayavardhan'.

Doctor Jayavardhan said a formal ' Hello' to them and focused on the patient.

Dean interfered and asked the Doctor 'What happened?'.

'Accident case, He was hit by an auto rickshaw and his head collided with a lamp post... severe head injury' - Dr. Jayavardhan

'Which part of the head is affected?’-Dean.

'Affected area is cerebrum in the brain and heavy blood loss in head' - Doctor.

'sss..pch....let me check' said Dean and  went closer to the patient, and looked at the ECG monitor. Two students those who are standing near to Dean observed his action.

'It's ok...PQRS wave is normal' said Dean generically and asked the doctor

    'Is he returned to consciousness?'

    'Yes' said the Doctor.

Dean responded to him 'ok' and concentrated on the patient.

He moved further closer to the patient and started to talk to him.

'Hi I am Dean Ranganathan....just keep cool and talk to me, then everything is going to be alright....just give a start...mm.. What is your name?' - Dean

'sh..shshs....' a loud breathing sound comes from patient's mouth, which means he is trying to talk. He opened his eyes slowly.

'Come on...you can...what is your name?' Dean asked him again.

Students in the ward keenly observed the patient.

'Th.. Th...Thir...thiru..thiru...naa...vukkara..su' Patient tried to speak in wobbly tone.

Suddenly Thiru started to breathe rapidly.

Looking at this dean nervously said 'My god...its Hypernea' and looked at the ECG monitor.

PQRS wave is higher than the normal level.

Thiru's depth of breathing increased further. Dean, doctor and the students were nervous looking at the patient's condition. Suddenly Thiru's depth of breathing started to reduce drastically. ECG monitor displayed the reduced height of PQRS wave lesser than the normal level.

Looking at this scenario he tried CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) procedures to make him alive. But his efforts were vain.

‘We have to induce his rhythmicity by shock treatment, please take the paddle' asked the dean to the doctor.

Dean placed the pair of paddle on Thiru's chest wall and applied the shock. Whenever the shock is applied PQRS wave reached the peak and lowered down. Dean attempted it repetitively. Students were critically observing the method of applying shock treatment.

Suddenly Doctor noticed a straight line on ECG monitor.

'Dean there is no use in giving shock treatment...because he is dead' said the doctor to the Dean in plaintive acoustic tone.

    One year later

    September 7, 2007 at 7.30 Morning,

Police training campus, Vannarapet(a town in Chennai city).

All the police trainees finished their exercises on the ground and started to move to their respective hostels. Meanwhile, police trainer Mr. Kumar entered his cabin and sat on his chair. Immediately his desk phone rang. He took the receiver and began to speak

    'Hello, Kumar here' -Kumar.

    '...............'

    'Oh.... which area?' - Kumar.

    '..........'

'Is it saidapet? (a town in Chennai city)' - Kumar.

    '...........'

'Yes, yes... today is the last day for the trainees, tomorrow all the trainees will take charge as an Inspector in their respective allotted areas.' - Kumar

    '...........'

'Ya..let met check that guy and I will send him' - Kumar.

    '............'

    'Alright' - Kumar

Then he disconnected the call and dialed some numbers on the dial pad of the telephone. In other end the call was attended.

'Hello, this is Kumar' - Kumar.

    '.........'

'Do you have the list of newly appointed Inspector names and their allotted areas... I want only Tamil nadu's Chennai area and not the other states list.' - Kumar.

    '.........'

'Thanks... can you please tell me who is allotted for Saidapet area?' - Kumar

    '........'

    'Abdul Naheem... am I right?'-Kumar.

    '........'

'Thank you... good day... bye'- Kumar kept the receiver on the telephone and went to the trainees hostel.

He entered into a room and asked the group of trainees in that room

'Who is Abdul Naheem here?' - Kumar.

'It's me ' said a man. He came out of the trainee group and stood in front of him.

'You are allotted to Saidapet area as an Inspector, due to some reasons you are asked to join today, so get ready... pack your things and report to Mr. Muruganantham, Inspector of saidapet Police station, asap'  said Kumar and left  the room.

Abdul got ready within half an hour of time. He called his best friend named Selvam and told

'Hey ..I am leaving today... you are from Andhra camp right... call me and inform that in which part of Andhra(A part of India) you are posted '.

Selvam agreed by nodding his head up and down.

Abdul gave a firm handshake to all of his roommates and left the Campus. He entered into the Jeep which was waiting for him outside the police training campus.

The jeep started to move. To his eyes, police training campus slowly disappeared as the jeep progressed away. When it disappeared from his eyes simultaneously his mind intensified his memories and experiences in the police training campus. His grief for his sudden, unexpected departure from his friends made him to drown deep into his thoughts.

'I had been enjoying, making fun, playing cards till today morning with the other trainees, now my mind is struggling to accept this sudden change.... so my life's serious chapter has started...why I am joining earlier.... what is the reason... I couldn't guess.... I am joining as an inspector... Will I be able to handle the constables those who work under me?.... will they co-operate? Will there be any chance of risk in this type of job, because I am nervous that how I am going deal the criminals like burglars, murderers’ likewise many questions started rising in his mind.

After some minutes the jeep stopped suddenly 'Sir, we reached the station' said the driver.

'Answers to my questions are not so far' Abdul said to himself and got down from the jeep.

When he entered the police station, Abdul noticed that everybody's eyes were pointed at him, which increased his trepidation. A man with a gawky look on Abdul, came near to him. Somehow Abdul tuned up his confidence and got ready to face the further consequences.

'Hi, I am Muruganantham, Inspector of this station' said the man and gave his hand for a formal handshake.

Abdul responded by saying 'Hi, I am Abdul Naheem' and completed the formal hand shake.

'Come, let's move to my cabin' - Muruganantham

Muruganantham took up his seat in his cabin and Abdul occupied the seat in front of him.

'The reason why I wanted you to join before the joining date is because I am transferred to Kanyakumaari (City of Tamilnadu, Southern India) and for some personal reason I have planned to leave this station today... as you are my replacement, I just wanted to hand over the cases and the status of it. Before that, let me introduce you to all' said Muruganantham.

After completing the introduction formalities, Muruganantham started to explain about the cases he dealt.

'These are all petty cases, these cases can be taken care by our head constables, but.... there is a murder case which is on high priority... Assistant commissioner is directly dealing it now.' -Muruganantham.

Abdul begins to listen him sharp.

Muruganantham continues '5 days before, our station's SI (Sub-Inspector) Mr. Ravuthar was suspiciously gone astray. We found his dead body in mangled condition on the Tambaram Highways. I received the post mortem report from the hospital, which was mentioned that it was an accident. I was questioned by my higher officials that why he went to Tambaram?, because Tambaram is a long way from our Police station, there is no need to go there other than his personal work. I remember that he was in his Uniform when he was found dead. So I started to dig his records, I came to know that he was suspended many times for misusing his police power for bribery, also I heard that he has a habit of going to Tambaram highways regularly to snatch money by threatening the vehicle drivers, those who pass by that highway. I closed his case file by giving a report that he might have gone to the Tambaram highway for a bribe, unfortunately he would have been hit by a lorry or other heavy vehicle which would have caused his death, vehicles are too fast at night times on that highway and so his body was mangled condition, this is not a final report, anyhow It might change according to the further reports from the hospital . My higher officials accepted this report. Yesterday I received a mail from the hospital where the post-mortem was done. The mail says that they found cyanide content in his body and they also found a small nail like weapon in his dress. Now they say it is a murder. This mail was CC'd to our highest officials too. As I am moving today I didn't prepare the report. Since you’re my replacement you have to carry on this case'.

'Did you have any photos or physical model of that weapon'- Abdul.

'Ya... they have sent the weapon, it is with me... let me show you' said Muruganantham and opened his drawer to take the weapon.

He showed the weapon to Abdul which was packed in a transparent cover. The weapon was in damaged condition and looks strange to him, He noticed that one end of the weapon is sharp and the other end is attached with a cone shaped object.

    Weapon's shape

'This cone part is made of thick hard paper which was glued on one end and on the other end where the cyanide was coated. The weapon is in damaged condition may be because of the vehicles passed on it.... mmmm.... my prediction is murderer would have used this weapon to kill Ravuthar and when the poison was penetrated into his body, he would have fainted on the road, Vehicle moving at speed wouldn't have noticed the body on the road and so why his body was mangled condition. We need to find who is the culprit and what is the motive behind ' said Muruganantham and he took a key from his pocket.

'This is your room key and you are going to reside in police quarters at Mandaveli(A town in Chennai).....we both can go there now, let you settle down and you can take charge from tomorrow. Come, let us move to police quarters.' - Muruganantham.

    Both arrived to quarters.

'I stayed in this room... you can check your convenience. If you find any problems you can call to this quarter's secretary, he will respond to you immediately... I have to move…. it’s all up to you now' said Muruganantham and he was very eager to leave the place as soon as possible.

Meanwhile the constables kept Abdul's luggages inside the room.

'There is a mess nearby this quarters, owner of the mess usually brings dinner for me at night to my room, I will ask him to do the same to you too, you can continue with him if you like his food. Ok, I am moving, all the best.'

Having said that Muruganantham left the room.

Now Abdul is alone. His thoughts once again fetched his happy memories with his friends in police hostel.

'Till yesterday I was not aware of this seriousness in my job... my first case is a murder case... who is he?... why did he kill him?... will there be any trouble for me during this investigation?.... if the killer comes to know that I am the one dealing this case, will he kill me too?..... my god... why my thoughts are killing me? ... I am tired... let me sleep’, He began to sleep.

After several minutes, a mystical masked man jumped into the balcony and neared Abdul. Abdul was in sound sleep. The masked man took a needle shaped weapon and a tiny sachet from his pocket. He opened the tiny sachet which contains
