    Chapter One

Mykala tried to remain calm as Holly shoved her into the office area. Several desks littered the otherwise open space, and cork boards lined the walls. There were no cops sitting behind the desks, however. Her ex-boyfriend, Drax, had negotiated this space with the chief of police, and was assured complete privacy. As a result, he and Holly could do anything to Mykala, even kill her, and no one would ever know.

No, that wasn’t true. Knox was close by, and he had shifter hearing. He and his friends would be able to listen in on the conversation. If Drax hurt her, then the entire bear shifter clan would storm the police station and try to save her.

I’ve found her. Holly flipped her red hair over her shoulder and snapped the gum in her mouth.

Mykala. Drax turned away from the man he was talking to and spread his arms out to the sides. His dark hair had grown out some since she had last seen him, and his locks hovered just past his ears. He wore his trademark duster jacket and jeans, and looked quite refreshed for someone who had been worrying about his fiancé. His amber eyes were warm as he dragged his gaze over her small frame. Where have you been?

I’ve been so scared. Mykala averted her gaze, hoping that Drax wouldn’t see the revulsion in her features. She jerked her arm out of Holly’s grasp and closed the distance between them.

There, there. He engulfed her with his large biceps and smoothed his hands over her back. Mykala did her best not to shudder, but after everything she had learned about this monster, it was difficult.

She had trusted and confided in Drax. They had fought together and shared intimate moments. Now, after leaning on their relationship for most of her adult life, Mykala had learned that this man was a living lie. Drax cared nothing for her. He didn’t care about anyone. All he wanted was to be in control. Power was his mistress, and there was no room in his heart for anyone or anything else.

He had been using her, just like he was using the rest of their vigilante group. He had formed the Guardian Angels not to keep humans safe, but so that he could scare people and force the government to impose martial law.
