Prologue
Zezukx’s eyes pierced the darkness to come into contact with Higet. The scientist stood nervously waiting for him to speak. The information relayed to him was of utmost importance and he needed to ensure that he would be able to use it to his advantage when the time arose.
How did you discover this?
Zezukx asked, finally breaking the silence.
The Lethean shuffled. I was assigned to design a serum that would reverse the mutation of the human. While I researched her DNA I came to discover this truth.
This must remain between us,
he commanded. You will not repeat this to anyone, not even your Inkosi.
He is no longer my Inkosi, Captain,
Higet beamed. You are now our master.
I am no one’s master. I am the captain of the guard, nothing more.
When Helux abdicated his post as Captain of the guard, he had appointed the second in command - Zerug. However, Prince Dhahn had since seized command of the army and appointed Zezukx as captain. It was difficult to decipher the new captain’s loyally as he had never pledged his allegiance to Helux and only followed commands.
As far as the Zezukx was concerned, he was loyal to no one. He performed his duties as needed and nothing else. Perhaps that was the reason Dhahn appointed him captain. Helux had broken the edicts of the land and of the federation. It was now his duty to restore Viutera to its former respect.
Higet vowed his silence about the vital information which the scientist had revealed. He wondered why Higet chose to tell him and not Prince Dhahn and how he could best use this information to his advantage - not for personal gain, but for his duty’s sake. Until that time he decided what to do with this information, no one must know of the human’s paternity. Prince Dhahn vowed to keep her safe and as captain of the guard, Zezukx pledged to do what was best for Viutera.
CHAPTER 1
I WILL NOT SIT TWIDDLING my thumbs while you go off somewhere,
Milena snapped.
She’d had enough of Dhahn confining her as though she was his prisoner. He’d prevented the marshals from taking her back home and now he was going off to search for his parents while she must be kept under guard in his palace. If she wasn’t under the watchful eye of the federation police, she’d annihilate them and make her escape. The trouble with that was that she would be hunted down and executed without trial.
Why are you being so difficult?
Dhahn asked, his voice displaying his impatience. You are safer here.
Like the last time you left me behind and I became Helux’s slave?
It is different now.
She curled her hands into fists at her side. How can you be sure? How do you know he doesn’t have his henchmen remaining here to carry out his dubious plot?
That will not happen.
Ugh, you are so stubborn!
Dhahn chuckled and cocked one brow. I am stubborn? Have you seen your reflection in the mirror lately?
Milena was frustrated with always being inside under guard. Dhahn had been leaving frequently to find his parents. Sometimes for many diurnal cycles. If she left the palace, it was always under the watchful eyes of the marshals and royal guards. There was no moment of privacy for her, except when she was in the bathroom.
Seeing that her method of persuasion wasn’t working she pushed aside her ire and dredged up a sunny smile. He looked curiously at her as she closed the few steps between them.
They were standing near a window in the throne room. This was where Dhahn spent most of his time when in the palace. At the times when he visited the command post in the military community, he’d allow her to accompany him.
Prince Dhahn,
she softly said, resting a palm on his powerful arm.
The soft flesh in her hand tingled from touching him. His eyes pierced hers that her breath caught and she almost forgot why she had approached. They held each other’s gaze for some time as waves of current assailed her. Every time she was close to him, the tide pulled her under. In those moments, she felt secure as though there was nothing in the world that could harm her.
Please,
she managed as her voice had gone hoarse. Take me with you. Your absence leaves a void with me.
It wasn’t a lie. She preferred being around Dhahn. His presence alone was enough to ease her worry about going back to Earth. Yet, at every chance they met, they argued. His overprotectiveness was ridiculous, especially after knowing that she had evolved into a hybrid.
Be careful you do not entangle yourself into a situation from which you are unable to detangle yourself,
was Dhahn’s answer.
Whatever do you mean?
While you wish is to entrap me with your charms, your heart is connecting with mine.
That is absurd,
she scoffed, stepping away from him, even while her heart pounded erratically.
"Then why is your düénpoli (surgical scar) emitting such fierce light?"
That darn thing on her forehead just wouldn’t go away. Every time he was near her it tingled. She turned and strode to the far end of the room with a pout. Dhahn was the most incorrigible being she’d ever met and the most infuriating thing of all was that she couldn’t stand being a foot apart from him.
She felt his approach even though her back was to him. It wasn’t the same as when one would have a sixth sense that someone was behind them. This was no sixth sense. There was something explicitly sexual about the way she felt whenever he was near. Her entire body would respond, even the hairs on her head electrified. Her belly quivered while her woman's place ached.
She’d never experience sexual pleasure before, only sexual pain. In fact, the only man she’d ever known was her step-father and that was never consensual. Mating with
