Mykala Brach warmed her hands on her coffee mug and glanced over at the group of police officers standing a short distance away. I can't believe they just let us take over the precinct like this.

There's no love lost between the police chief and those savages on the reservation. This Bill guy has been looking for an excuse to kick them all off the sacred land and run them out of town. I may have told him that we could do that for him if he let us use his office space for the rest of the month.

That’s a hefty promise.

Sure, but it’s one I know we can deliver. Besides, Holly has been buttering him up for me. Even if things go south I think he’ll be okay with us staying here.

Mykala snorted. Everything was happening so fast. In the past two days, Drax had moved their base of operations to the police station and was once again working on the ultimate weapon to eradicate shifters for good. A weapon based on blood and semen samples from Knox, the shifter who had saved her life. As she took sip of her coffee, Mykala thought once again of the over-protective bear shifter. She wondered if he had fully recovered from his wounds, or if he was still unconscious.

Not that she could do anything to help. No, her efforts were better used here, as a spy in her former vigilante group. Knox’s clan was running out of time. It was up to her to dismantle the weapons lab and ensure the safety of the bear shifters in the area. All she needed was a free moment, an hour when Holly wasn’t in the lab. Unfortunately an opportunity had yet to present itself.

Drax leaned against one of the desks and sipped from his cup. Within seconds he made a bitter-looking face and put the mug aside. God, that stuff is horrible.

You're just used to your French Press back home. It was hard to believe that this man was once her boyfriend. At one time she fancied herself in love with him. Now she felt nothing.

I wish you'd look at me like that, Drax joked.

Mykala opened her eyes and forced herself to smile. Like what?

That smile over the coffee is the happiest I’ve seen you in weeks. He turned to face her, blocking out her view of others in the room. I wish I made you that happy.

You do.

Do I? He plucked the mug out of her hands and put it on the desk. I don’t know. Sometimes, I think you are repulsed by me.

Never. She placed her hand over his and ignored the revulsion that oozed its way over her skin. You and The Guardians are all I ever wanted in life.

So the shifter hasn’t changed your mind about me.

Of course not.

He relaxed and offered her a warm smile. I know that you’ve been through a lot. First your father is murdered by those shifter savages, and then that animal tried to manipulate you.
